SUMMARY
The Culinary Arts Teacher Assistant will support the Grab and Go eatery on TSD campus and support classroom instruction in the Culinary Arts program This individual will also participate in catering events with the Culinary Arts team both on and off campus. Knowledge of proper use of cooking tools and equipment and food handling and safety guidelines is required. Assists the teacher with monitoring the students inside and outside the center and works with children individually or in small groups. Works under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the assigned Teacher(s).Performs entry-level to routine (journey-level) educational assistance work Works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supports the Grab and Go eatery operations
- Monitors the classroom to ensure students are following cooking instructions and proper food and safety/handling guidelines
- Ensures students are on task and following the code of conduct
- May conduct instructional exercises with students in groups or individually as assigned by the teacher to help master assignments and reinforce learning concepts
- Participates in student data collection, documentation, and interpretation
- Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions and ensure a safe and orderly classroom.
- Models’ social-emotional expectations for students.
- Assumes responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Ensure instructional areas are maintained, orderly, and clean.
- Alert teacher of an individual child's special needs or problems.
- Supports catering events on and off campus with the Culinary Arts Team
- Purchases food and supplies within an allotted budget and Tracks daily expenses and sales
- Completes shopping trips for food and supplies using personal transportation.
- Provide an exceptional customer experience for all TSD stakeholders with intentional and professional practices that promote a culture of respect and focus on achieving equitable outcomes.
- May assume responsibility for supervision and instruction of students in the absence of the teacher for short periods.
- Completes written behavior reports when necessary.
- Acts as an advocate for students.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with Deaf high school students or young adults
- Valid Driver’s license, class C or higher, and able to legally operate a vehicle on Texas roadways.
- Educational Aide Certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency or the ability to obtain a valid Educational Aide certificate within 60 days of hire as required by 19 TAC §230.51.
- Sign Language: The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Signed Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) is ADVANCED. If hired with a sign language proficiency level below this level, you are required to participate in signed communication learning opportunities on a regular basis until you have achieved the sign language proficiency level assigned to your position.
Desired Qualifications
- Associates Degree in education, nutrition, culinary arts, business, marketing, or related field
- One year experience with Culinary Arts and/or Hospitality field
- Experience developing job aids or visual supports to help students understand work tasks
- Experience working with students with additional needs
- Food handler safety certification
- Knowledge of proper food safety and handling
- Knowledge of basic cooking tools and equipment
- Knowledge of fundamental cooking and baking techniques
