We are busy Ambulatory Surgery Center located in NY seeking to fill a full time Surgical Scrub Tech position. The Surgical Scrub Tech will assist the surgeon by providing and controlling the sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment required during surgical intervention. The Surgical Scrub Tech assures that instruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized, and available when needed.
Qualifications: ***Certified Surgical Technician by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)***
- Orthopedic experience required
- Surgical Scrub Tech must have completed high school or equivalent.
- Surgical Scrub Tech must have Ambulatory Surgery Center or Outpatient Facility experience
- Surgical Scrub Tech must be a Certified Surgical Technician by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or graduation from an accredited Surgical Technician training program per NY DOH regulations.
- Surgical Scrub Tech must have good command of the English language.
- Surgical Scrub Tech must possess the ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others.
- Surgical Scrub Tech must have superior dexterity skills needed to pass instruments.
Working Conditions:
- Requires extensive mobility (walking and standing) while performing duties.
- Periodic pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients and/or equipment.
- May have exposure to patients with communicable diseases.
- May have exposure to hazardous equipment or agents.
Responsibilities:
- Helps Nurse open sterile supplies and prepares for each procedure.
- Assists surgeons during procedure according to prescribed standards.
- Sets up table, instruments and supplies according to the type of procedure.
- Conduct sponge, needle and instrument counts with the circulating nurse before closure of cavity and skin. Inform the surgeon of results of the count.
- Maintains aseptic technique at all times as dictated by accepted standards.
- Read Surgeon's Preference card and confer with the circulating nurse as to requirements for the patient and the particular procedure. Seek further instruction/guidance as needed to plan nursing care activities with your circulating nurse.
- Observe details of the surgical procedure closely and coordinate your activities with each step of the operation.
- Pick up clues as to what will be required next by watching what the surgeon and his assistants are doing and by listening to what is being said.
- Develop your peripheral vision so that you can see what is going on the operative field while you are preparing materials on your table.
- Close observation of the procedure will improve your knowledge of the operation and recognition of normal and abnormal anatomical structures as related to your own activities in contributing to the team as a whole.
- Proceed to scrub according to prescribed procedure.
- Dry hands and arms, don sterile gown and gloves using closed gloving technique.
- Assists in maintenance and care of specimens as directed.
- Assists in application of dressings, casts, and in moving patients as directed.
- Decontaminates all equipment, instruments and supplies as directed in procedure.
- Compiles and makes available all necessary supplies needed for procedures.
- Prepares surgical trays, instruments, equipment, and supplies as directed in procedures.
- Discard soiled materials and waist in the proper receptacle in order to maintain cleanliness of the floor.
- Helps clean and maintain rooms, equipment, and furniture according to prescribed procedures.
- Assists in inventory storage and retrieval of supplies and equipment.
- Assists with emergency procedures as directed.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient and Center's communications/documents.
- Remove gown and glove, respectively.
- Take off gown in such a way that the outer surface does not touch your body or clothing.
- Assist in returning the room to proper order; leave the room clean and ready for use before you engage in another activity.
- Communicates a positive and caring attitude toward patient, peers, staff and all other contacts.
- Seeks guidance, direction and assistance when needed. Follows Center Policy and procedures at all times.
- Any and all other tasks, as re uested by Director of Nursing or RN, even when those tasks are not related to a typical scrub technician's duties. (As isting with cleaning, supplies, Spanish language-{if applicable interpretation}, medical records, ordering, etc.).
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Indoors in climate controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, to blood and body fluids which may carry infection, to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Good visual acuity, accurate color vision. Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape. Must have ability to speak and hear.
MACHINES/EQUIPMENT USED: Clinical equipment used for patient care, i.e., suction machine, Accucheck, office equipment computer, Xerox machine, addressograph.
