Queens-based non-profit social services agency serving individuals with developmental disabilities of all ages for more than 25 years is seeking a full-time Day Habilitation Specialist who is responsible for providing support and assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities in a day habilitation program. They work closely with program participants to enhance their daily living skills, promote community integration, and facilitate their overall personal growth and independence.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized plans and goals for program participants based on their abilities, needs, and interests.
- Support and encourage participants to engage in social and recreational activities, both within the day habilitation program and in the community.
- Plan and facilitate group activities, such as arts and crafts, music therapy, educational sessions, and physical exercises, to promote skill development and social interaction.
- Assist participants in developing and enhancing their communication skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication methods.
- Collaborate with other team members, including occupational therapists, speech therapists, and behavioral specialists, to ensure a holistic approach to individual care.
- Monitor and document participant progress, behaviors, and achievements, and maintain accurate records of their daily activities and any significant changes.
- Implement behavior management strategies and techniques to address challenging behaviors and promote positive behavioral changes.
- Provide transportation and accompany participants on community outings, appointments, and recreational activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Maintain a safe and clean environment within the day habilitation facility, adhering to health and safety regulations and protocols.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required
- Covid-19 Vaccine required
- Previous experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities in a day habilitation, residential, or community-based setting is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of person-centered approaches and best practices in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Familiarity with behavior management techniques and strategies to address challenging behaviors effectively.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build rapport with program participants, their families, and other staff members.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and situations and remain calm under pressure.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and record-keeping purposes.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain certification).
