TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the school principal, the teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and Highland County School Board Policies. The teacher creates an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. The teacher supervises students in a variety of school related settings, monitors and evaluates student outcomes, and communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community. The teacher develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. The teacher maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. The teacher oversees the appropriate use and care of instructional resources, materials, and school facilities.
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests, and abilities of students and aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning.
- As assigned, meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Creates an instructional environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
- Provides an instructional program to meet the needs of each and all assigned students.
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of a supervisor.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for all instructional activities, and communicating these objectives to students.
- Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of VDOE curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development.
- Plans for and utilizes instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.
- Take all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, Highland County School Board policies and administrative regulations.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures to maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Makes provisions, within reason, to be available to students and parents/guardians for education-related purposes outside the instructional day upon request.
- Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents/guardians, and the community which reflects the recognition of and respect for every individual.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
- Appraises self-effectiveness and successfully utilizes new skills and information to increase effectiveness. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the total school program.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on and serve on staff committees as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
- Participates in student and parent/guardian activities that occur during the school year; including open houses, student clubs, and after-school activities.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by a principal or other appropriate administrator.

- Must possess a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
- Must be eligible for, or in possession of, an appropriate Virginia license.
- Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, and the public.
The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
