Nassau County Department of Public Works is seeking applicants for the position of Sanitary Engineer III.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs professional engineering duties and reviews the location, design, constructability, and contract compliance of vendors’ work involving engineering support related to the collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater and plans for ground water supplies; performs related duties as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES
1. Performs professional engineering duties and reviews the location, design and constructability of vendors' work involving engineering support related to the collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater and plans for ground water supplies.,
2. Reviews the contract compliance of vendors' work.
3. Reviews plans for a county-side phase of the sanitary engineering program such as water supply, sewage, and industrial wastes.
4. Promotes improvements, extensions, and new installations for protection of public health in the fields of public water supplies, sewerage systems, sewage treatment plants, and industrial waste treatment plants.
5. Confers with industrial officials to improve on industrial waste treatment.
6. Reviews evaluations of vendors' bids; assists in coordinating with vendors to ensure design plans conform with engineering principles and practices.
7. Reviews design modifications during construction, as needed; assists in coordinating the implementation of corrective measures.
8. Reviews recommendations and correspondence prepared by Sanitary Engineers on investigations of industrial waste and treatment works and sewerage systems; prepares correspondence on official actions and/or complex matters.
9. Assists in ensuring work schedules meet contract specifications; modifies schedules to compensate for delays.
10. Reviews the collection, recording, and analysis of reports and information required for program operation and interprets them in relation to program requirements.
11. May delegate tasks to subordinate Sanitary Engineers.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Thorough knowledge of the modern methods and practices of sanitary engineering and sanitation.
2. Thorough knowledge of the chemistry and bacteriology of water, sewage, and liquid wastes and of modern engineering practices in the fields of water supply and purification, sewerage and sewage treatment, and disposal of industrial wastes.
3. Thorough knowledge of engineering plans, specifications, and estimates.
4. Thorough knowledge of the principles of project management, including contracts, contract administration, and construction economics.
5. Knowledge of departmental administrative and technical policies and practices.
6. Ability to lead a program in sanitary engineering.
7. Ability to obtain vendors' compliance with construction specifications.
8. Ability to lead investigations and interpret regulations and policies of the department.
9. Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and statistical data.
10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, departmental administrators, vendor personnel, municipal administrators, and the public.
11. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a major in Engineering
and
Five years of satisfactory experience as a sanitary engineer.
Necessary Special Requirement
Possession of a professional engineer's license issued by the State of New York.
NOTE: A Master's degree in Engineering from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major course work in sanitary or environmental engineering may be substituted for one year of the experience required above.
