OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT
Aurora Water Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems, treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater for irrigation, billing and collection, public outreach and water conservation, acquisition and development of future water rights, major capital projects programs, and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health.
The SCADA Electrical Specialist I is an entry position and assist a highly skilled team. Their role is to assist the team with job completion, industry standards and coordination of highly complex electrical systems for the Aurora Water Department.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily duties include evaluating, diagnosing, troubleshoots, installs, alters, repairs, and maintains both medium and low voltage systems from 120 volts to 13.8 kV. Equipment ranges from motors, generators, switchgear, motor controllers, transformers, wiring systems, lighting, electronic components, and other related equipment.
- Prepares preliminary cost estimates for materials, supplies and equipment for proposed construction or renovation by working through vendors.
- Manages and maintains accurate records and logs of the operation, repair and
maintenance of electrical, mechanical, and other related materials.
- Develops and maintains schematic wiring diagrams for all electrical systems.
- Weekly attends staff meetings, meetings with vendors and contractors.
- Responsible for maintaining and following uniform safety practices and procedures regarding electrical, mechanical, and other maintenance related equipment in the Division.
- Working with and in areas close to energized lines and underground vaults.
- Performing Distribution and Transmission Switching to accommodate repairs and clearances.
- Working independently on circuits 600 VAC or less
- Performing the physical aspects of line maintenance
- Performs corrective, preventative and predictive low to medium voltage electrical maintenance to ensure proper operation of wastewater, water, reclaimed water, collection and the distribution systems and components.
- Performs installation, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of low-voltage and medium 3-phase voltage equipment and switch gear, other electrical systems, and components.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment problems and implements effective repairs and adjustments on VFD’s, Motor Soft Starts, and MCC starter buckets.
- Prepares, plans, schedules, processes, and completes work orders utilizing a computer maintenance management system to aiding asset management and inventory control.
- Monitors and maintains material, inventory, and supplies; will provide the technical expertise input to purchase the necessary materials and safety supplies within established guidelines.
- Provides startup of new equipment, systems, and processes.
- Assists in the development and maintenance of a preventative maintenance program.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Working knowledge of NFPA70E
- Working knowledge of NEC
Experience:
- Four (4) years of experience as an electrician. Industrial Electrician experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge:
- In-depth technical & Electro-Mechanical knowledge & skills for repairing, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, transformers, switchgear of voltage from 12 volts to 13,000 volts and other electrical apparatus related to the operation of water treatment plants and other related facilities.
- Principles, methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in electrical construction and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of computer systems, SCADA, and interface equipment.
- National Electric Code, NFPA 70 and relevant municipal codes.
- Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions
- Tools, equipment, and materials relevant to electrical maintenance.
- Functions and operation of electric motors, HVAC equipment, control circuits, switchgear, and generators.
- Knowledge of trade occupational hazards and appropriate precautionary safety procedures, particularly as they pertain to work on medium voltage electrical systems and equipment.
Skills:
- Advanced skilled journeyman level skills for work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of both medium and low voltage electrical systems found in the water treatment and pumping facilities.
- Employees in this class perform skilled electrical repair tasks in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade, including responsibility for performing the special work required for medium voltage electrical equipment and controls.
- Knowledge of the mechanical and operational aspects of water treatment equipment and its installation.
- Safely exercise sound judgment and initiative in resolving complex electrical, electro/mechanical, and other maintenance related problems.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Must possess a current Colorado Driver's License with a good driving history.
- Must possess a current Colorado Journeyman or higher Electrical license.
WORKING CONDITIONS Frequent - 2.6 hours to 5.5 hours per shift
Essential Personnel:
- When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
- Occasional Medium physical work requiring the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
- Continuous walking and standing for inspections and testing.
- Frequent pushing, pulling, bending, crouching/stooping, and climbing to test and inspect electrical systems.
- Hand/eye coordination to operate a computer, testing and calibration equipment.
- Hand/foot coordination for operation of a vehicle to travel to remote sites.
- Normal color vision, to determine wire colors and to read manuals, test instruments, and other written material.
- Hearing and listening to troubleshoot electronic equipment and communicate on telephone and radio.
Work Environment:
- Works both indoors and outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions and high frequency, including: constant noise, dust, allergens, chemicals, solvents, fumes, smoke, gases, grease, and oil; may work in confined spaces and at elevated heights; may be required to work in highest category Arc Flash rated environments (Category 4); must remain clean shaven as required to wear respiratory equipment; may perform duties in standing water, wet environments, or on uneven and slippery surfaces, below ground, on ladders and/or scaffolding, around moving vehicles and equipment and on equipment with moving parts subject to continuous vibration; the ability to wear, don and doff a self-contained breathing apparatus.
