Database Engineer II
Position Highlights:
- The Database Engineer II, is part of a dynamic team that administers and manages enterprise database systems and database administration support. Assumes a key role in providing guidance to the team members and maintaining all the critical databases in the organization. This position helps in building database standards and mentors team members. The incumbent supports strategic initiatives by working closely with IT and Research staff supporting their need for databases around different applications. Defines, documents and implements best practices along with procedures for database migrations (hardware refreshes, version upgrades, on prem to cloud migrations) for SQL, Oracle, MySQL, Snowflake and any other database systems as required.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the administration and maintenance of enterprise databases along with the design and access of these databases by applications and individuals.
- SQL Server/Oracle installation & configuration in production environments using best practices. Database migrations and/or database server consolidations. Right-sizing VM for SQL Server. Performance tuning databases and long running queries.
- Performs and support Installation, backups, support, capacity planning, and database performance tuning.
- Manages standard DBA tasks, including securing databases, managing space, monitoring performance, installing patches.
- Proactively monitors database performance and capacity and resolves performance or capacity issues.
- Partners with Architecture/Technical teams to provide technical expertise in the use of database technology and design optimal solutions.
- Assists project teams in identifying database requirements, performance, and cost implications.
- Designs and develops integrated systems test plans relevant to database implementations.
- Ensures that all systems are adequately tested to ensure integrity and accuracy of data processed throughout the organization.
- SQL/Oracle Server assessments, health checks, performance analysis and security audits.
- Provides on-call production support on a rotational basis, including monitoring and facilitating resolution of support for all data engineering related services.
- Addresses production support break-fix in timely manner, keeping IT management and business informed of status and resolutions. Reviews existing pipelines for errors and perform root cause analysis to develop efficient solutions. Monitors database servers and responds to alerts.
- Sets design, test, documentation and implementation standards in accordance with HIPPA and other patient data management policies and ensures that data management systems adhere to them.
- Researches, proposes and implements innovative usage of cutting-edge technology to advance the mission and goals of the organization.
- Adapts to new technologies and seeks opportunities to implement better solutions.
- Supports Informatica and other data warehouse and business intelligence applications as necessary.
Credentials and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree: field of study – IS, Computer Science, Business Administration, or similar
- Minimum 7 years of experience working as a database administrator (primarily Oracle, SQL server).
- An additional 4 years of experience can be substituted in lieu of a Bachelor's degree
- One year experience in cloud environment utilizing related technologies like Snowflake, Azure.
- Experience with RDBMS architecture and database setup, configuration and tuning (instance processes, memory areas, undo and redo logs and archiving, control files, pfile and spfile management,etc.).
- Experience in database and application object management, including DDL, table constraints and triggers clusters, object storage allocation and tuning, indexing options and tradeoffs, partitioning, etc.
- Performance tuning, including methodology, approaches, and facilities (traces, auditing, support scripts and strong knowledge of features and options in Oracle Enterprise Manager).
- Experience managing disk storage allocation and usage – Knowledge in Oracle ASM is preferred.
- Knowledge in RAID technologies is a plus.
- Strong experience working with SQL server database including SQL 2019.
- Experience handling complex database recovery scenarios, troubleshooting various installation and patching issues.
- Experience working with Linux and AIX requiring extensive knowledge in: UNIX Commands, Monitor memory, disk usage, I/O on unix/linux servers, shell scripting.
- Experience in software development environments using Agile/SCRUM, and code management/versioning.
