Job Overview:
As Streets Maintenance Worker, you will perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in maintenance work and operate equipment in the course of street , street drainage, and pubic right-of-way maintenance operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Qualified candidates should possess the ability to perform the following essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled, and occasional skilled labor tasks in the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, and stormwater infrastructure.
- Performs asphalt repair; potholes and sections of blacktop are extracted and repaired; operates rollers, and other light equipment; rakes asphalt; patches concrete sidewalks, curb and gutter, driveway aprons and other concrete structures.
- Maintains Town property and rights-of-way; removal of trash and other debris/litter.
- Cuts grass with tractors, bush hogs, lawn and riding mowers and weed eaters; trims bushes and trees to retain sight distance.
- Installs and replaces street signs.
- Paints street markings to include stop bars, crosswalks, parking spaces, etc.
- Operates construction equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, paving roller, street sweepers and other related light and medium equipment.
- Performs minor preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Removes ice and snow from Town streets and roads.
- Performs occasional after hours/on-call duty to respond to emergencies or special events.
- Keeps record log of work activities.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of equipment facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and/or repair activities.
- Basic knowledge of hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions related to traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operation.
- Basic knowledge of construction materials, concreate, asphalt, hot patch, cold patch, oils, paints and a other materials used in street maintenance.
- Understanding of proper uses of a variety of vehicle, equipment, power tools, and hand tools, including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
- Possession of a NC Class B CDL or ability to obtain CDL within 1 year of employment.
Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee may be required to work night, early morning, or weekend hours dependent on workload factors in addition to normally scheduled work hours.
The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
