Assistant Center Director
Job Description
Under the supervision of the Center Director, the Assistant Center director helps in the daily management of his/her assigned Extended Child Care Center. Duties include supervision of children, center staff and facility, curriculum planning and presentation, record keeping and budgeting, communication, and other tasks necessary for the successful operation of the center. As part of this position’s duties, Assistant Center Directors will assume the supervision of an Extended Child Care center, for a short or extended period of time, in the absence of a center’s regular Center Director.
Child Supervision
* The Asst. Center Director will work regularly supervising child in large and small groups, and will give individual attention to children as needed.
* The Asst. Center Director will be aware of the children’s health and safety at all times.
* In the absence of the Center Director, the Asst. Center Director will assume supervision of all children present and perform all duties associated with this responsibility.
Staff Supervision* Under the supervision of the Center director, the Asst. Center Director will show leadership supervising the daily work of other adults in the center.
* The Asst. Center Director will ensure that all adults working in the center maintain good workplace safety practices.
* In the absence of the Center Director, the Asst. Center Director will assume supervision of all center staff and perform all duties associated with this responsibility.
Curriculum Planning and Programming
* The Asst. Center Director will show leadership in curriculum planning, ensuring that planned curriculum and other center activities are based on the assessed needs and interests of the children enrolled in the center.
* The Asst. Center Director will work with the Center director in completing the assessments of all children enrolled in the center, using the agency’s prescribed systems.
* The Asst. Center Director will prepare meals and snacks as necessary.
* The Asst. Center Director will help children maintain good behavior, using positive and preventive methods and following the agency’s Child Behavior Policy and systems.
* The Asst. Center Director will present curriculum to children on a regular basis.
* In the absence of the Center Director, the Asst. Center Director will assume supervision of the center’s program, and perform all duties associated with this responsibility.
Facility Maintenance
* The Asst. Center Director will, as part of his/her regular duties, make every effort to keep the child care facilities, both inside and outside, and all equipment, materials and supplies, clean, safe, and well maintained at all times.
Professionalism* Asst. Center Directors will attend all regular center staff meetings and make every effort to attend agency meetings and in-services, as appropriate.
* Asst. Center Directors are expected to be punctual and very flexible in their work schedules and assigned duties.
* Asst. Center Directors understand that their workplace assignment is determined by the Executive or Program Director, and that they are expected to report to work at the center assigned.
* Asst. Center Directors are expected to be knowledgeable of and able to work with the diversity of cultures present in the families that will use the center.
* Asst. Center Directors are expected to perform their duties with a good attitude and professional manner at all times.
* Asst. Center Directors are expected to understand that there may be changes, unexpected occurrences, and possibly crisis in their work environment, and that they will be expected to deal with these in a professional manner.
*Asst. Center Directors are expected to perform their duties in a manner that will help them prevent problems and crisis before they occur.
* Asst. Center Directors are expected to be improving their work related skills.
* Asst. Center Directors are expected to assume the duties of a Center Director in their absence or when asked by the Executive or Program Director.
* Asst. Center Directors will perform all duties and tasks as assigned or that are necessary for the safe and orderly operation of the center or agency.
Record Keeping and Budgeting
* The Asst. Center Director may be assigned regular duties in this work area and will assume responsibility for these duties in the absence of the Center Director.
Communication
* The Asst. Center Director will establish and maintain good communication with all the diverse families using the center.
* The Asst. Center Director will maintain good communication with all members of their center’s staff, agency administration, and office staff.
* The asst. Center Director will establish and maintain good communication with all school personnel, visitors and community members.
* The Asst. Center Director will represent the center in the absence of the Center Director.
* The Assistant Center Director will use the agency’s line of supervision, Center Director, Program Director, Executive Director, to solve problems, present questions and ideas, and resolve issues in the center as they arise.
Minimum Qualifications
The minimum qualifications for a Assistant Center Director in an Extended Child Care center are outlined in Title 22 of the California State Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing regulations and Title 5 Education Code.
- A minimum of 12 Child Development (ECE) units, qualifying candidate for Children’s Center Associate Teacher Permit, plus an additional 3 units of ECE Administration. Three additional ECE Administration units should be completed within a year.
- Preferred 2 units of adult supervision
- Passed medical, TB, and fingerprint clearances.
- Provide proof of immunized against influenza, pertussis, and measles prior to employment.
- Completed CPR, First Aid, and Health & Safety training.
- The ability to visually supervise children and staff, unaided by other staff.
- The ability to physically help an injured child, in danger or in distress. Must be able to run and move quickly to help children.
- Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds.
