Little Sisters of the Poor – St. Mary’s Home
The Little Sisters of the Poor are accepting applications for a full-time Cook at our St. Mary’s Home, a long-term care community serving the elderly poor. This individual will support the Dietary Manager of our Home, which enjoys a 5-star staffing rating. The Cook will also have the satisfaction of bringing joy and comfort to the Home’s Residents and of making a difference in their lives. Located at 2325 N. Lakewood Ave. in the Lincoln Park Neighborhood of Chicago, near public transportation (bus and train).
Minimum Qualifications Required:
Responsible for storage, preparation, cooking and serving of food for Residents according to menus and specific modified diets; and for a clean sanitary kitchen and equipment. These services must be consistent with the Home's standards and philosophy and in compliance with all regulations, codes, policies and procedures that govern the facility.
- Ability to follow a standardized recipe and be creative.
- Have form perception and color discrimination in order to detect differences in appearance of food, indicating spoilage or contamination.
- Manual hand dexterity and motor coordination in order to manipulate kitchen utensils skillfully.
- Specific knowledge of care, use and sanitation of equipment and utensils used in the storage, preparation and handling of food.
- Ability to withstand temperature changes, stand for long periods, bend, lift, reach, and walk.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks with accuracy and on a timely basis.
- Willingness and availability to work variable hours, including weekends and holidays
- Possess verbal skills and ability in order to explain job duties to workers.
- Possess ability to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
- High School graduate or the equivalent with professional food preparation training or minimum of 4 years verifiable experience in quantity food production or hotel/restaurant cooking.
- Good communication skills, including proficiency in spoken and written English;
- Long-term care experience is a plus, but all candidates will be considered.
- Must be comfortable with the elderly and disabled.
- Must be able to work cooperatively for the best interests of Residents and the facility.
- Must be adaptable to changing work schedules and enjoy a non-routine job.
