A registered nurse (RN) is a professional nurse who is responsible for leadership, direction and clinical supervision of the health care team including the licensed practical nurses, medication assistants and certified nursing assistants. Accountable for both the provision of nursing care and the coordination of care for the resident in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. The RN has supervisory responsibility for the licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants in the area of direct patient care.
40% - Administers medications and performs treatments.-
Administers medications prescribed for routine administration including those given via oral, subQ, IM, nasal, eye, ear, vaginal, rectal, inhaler and nebulizer routes. Observes the effects of medications, reports to the RN or MD any unusual or adverse reactions. Assures compliance with the State and Federal guidelines related to medication pass.

Administers IV therapy and IV prepared piggyback medications and installs heparin and saline flushes. Completes blood draws.

Administers PRN medications as indicated.

Performs treatments including: clean and sterile dressing changes, tracheostomy care and changes, skin tear protocol, catheter care and changes, colostomy care, blood sugar checks, G or J tube care and feeding, peritoneal dialysis, oxygen administration, suctioning and nebulizer use.

Administers emergency care including CPR.

Performs EKGs and bladder scans.
20% - Collects and records data which will be incorporated into nursing assessments and participates in the overall planning and implementation of the resident's plan of care.-
Reports significant resident health concerns to the nurse manager and the physician. Assures continuity through the inner shift exchange of information.

Counsels and provides health teaching to the resident and/or family members based on need.

Interacts with residents, families and representatives of other agencies on an ongoing basis.

Participates in the overall planning and implementation of the restorative plan of care.

Documents medication administration, treatments, treatment progress notes, weekly summaries, monthly summaries, comprehensive summaries, MDS assessments and restorative nursing notes.
25% - Function as the team leader on the unit as well as during code situations (Code Blue and Red Alert).-
Assures safe environment for residents, staff, families and visitors.

Provides guidance and supervision to the licensed practical nurses, medication assistants and certified nursing assistants.

Participates in Quality Assurance and/or other committees as assigned.

Attends and directs staff to attend required in-service programs.
10% - Monitors and assists with resident dining.-
Assures that the care needs of high-risk residents are followed.
5% - Perform other duties as assigned.
