Senior Estimator
Job Description
Senior position that incorporates multiplying talents within the department through training. Natural aptitude with handling numbers, analyzing figures and organizing costs is necessary. Candidates must read complex blueprints, and must be able to quickly understand and visualize construction drawings. We require a high level of personal organization, initiative, and a team-oriented approach. All employees are to be ambassadors for SteelFab's highest ethical, quality and professional standards.
- Coordinates with bid administrator for electronic retrieval from clients and distribution to potential subcontractors
- Prepare scope, alternate and exclusions in proposals for review and submission
- Perform thorough and accurate material and labor take-off using company software
- Coordinate and train other estimators and project engineers on processes and be a resource to others in the department
- Coordinate with purchasing for material pricing, unusual sizes, quantities, rolled steel, etc.
- Run software reports from takeoff for review by sales VP, President, or assigned bid reviewer.
- Prepare a completed recap of costs plus supporting vendor scope analysis for review by managers
- Coordination of project scope and schedule with vendors/subcontractors through phone calls and emails
- Work with designers and contractors to develop value engineering and optional pricing, establish conceptual budget pricing and scope of work, including collaborating on cost and schedule saving ideas.
- Provide feedback to vendors to allow them to best serve our company's needs
- Familiarity with Tekla UPF and coordinating price protection with Purchasing Dept.
- Promote company and capabilities to client and subcontractor base
- Work with project managers during project turnover period to insure a smooth transition from bid to construction
- Work with project managers to prepare change request pricing for design changes
- Overall assessments of “best practices” and how we utilize technology
- Establish and maintain relationships with customers and vendors to strengthen cooperation
- Prioritize to meet deadlines on multiple bids
- Participate in interviewing and recruiting potential new hires and input on hiring
- Gives preliminary review of other Estimators work (review of plans, Contractor’s Scope of Work, Project Schedules, pricing, proposals, etc)
- Act as estimate lead on large complex projects by delegating, reviewing, and consolidating take off done by assigned Estimators or Project Engineers.
- Be proficient in ability to create, track, and organize multiple rounds of bids, post bid pricing, and action items
- Act as point of contact for large complex projects requiring many rounds of budgeting, coordination, follow up, and scope review / adjustments
- Act as pre-construction manager on multiple recurring project designs. Requires ability to quickly use previous projects as references and implementation into new design.
Required: Two year technical degree or higher, with 5-12 years experience specific to steel fabrication. Proficient knowledge of Microsoft computer skills, particularly Excel and Bluebeam, natural aptitude handling & analyzing numbers. Must have flexibility to work overtime during periods of high volume
Preferred: Four year bachelor’s degree in construction, engineering or applied engineering studies. Knowledge in Tekla EPM software. Continuing education in construction, organization, and technical skills is strongly encouraged.

Pay: $90,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
