Job overview:
Teachers at ASA are responsible for providing culturally-relevant instruction, individualized attention, classroom management and direct supervision to at-risk youth. Additionally, teachers keep accurate records of student evaluations and attendance, and develop lesson plans and course curriculum materials as necessary.
Major duties and responsibilities:
· Performs diagnostic assessments and develops Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Alternative Education Plans (AEPs)
· Creates an appropriate classroom atmosphere conducive to individualized learning; classrooms are to be relaxed, yet controlled
· Updates and develops curriculum materials according to guidelines
· Keeps accurate records of student academic progress: recording units, tests, and projects completed with dates of completion for each
· Keeps accurate records of student attendance; records reasons for absences, early dismissals; accurately records contact with parents and follows up with parents and/or guidance counselor if student has missed two consecutive class periods
· Completes funding attendance reports and narratives, as necessary
· Uses prep period to confer with students and parents, maintains records, enriches curriculum material and plans co-curricula activities
· Coordinates and participates in after-school clubs, sports and social events
· Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in discipline area is required; master’s degree is preferred
· Illinois State certification (Type 09 is required)
· A minimum of two years teaching experience, preferably in an urban environment with at-risk students
· Ability and skills in updating and developing curriculum materials
· Demonstrated experience with classroom management, particularly in an urban environment with at-risk youth
· Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
· Ability to display a sense of enthusiasm for the teaching profession and a passion for teaching adolescent youth
· Demonstrated passion for working in an urban and multi-cultural environment with at-risk youth
· Demonstrated ability to provide culturally-relevant lessons and differentiated classroom instruction
· Ability to model appropriate professional and interpersonal skills and demand high expectations from students and staff
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office platform (Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint)
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35,064.00 - $65,739.00 per year
