WORK HOURS: 7:00 AM TO 3:30PM with stand-by
Individuals in this position provide semi and skilled labor in the Parks & Recreation, Beautification Division Department. The Grounds Maintenance Worker operates under the immediate supervision and direction of a Lead Worker and is subject to periodic performance evaluations by the applicable supervisor.
Provides a service for the landscaping, beautification, installation, care, maintenance and/or safety of all trees/palms and plant/vegetation for parks, rights-of-way, recreational facilities, public buildings, City properties, and other areas being worked or in Parks and Recreation-Beautification Division.
Operates miscellaneous equipment and vehicles as necessary including; but not limited to; gas powered utility carts; riding mowers; smaller mowers; small gas powered chippers/mulchers; hand held and/or gas/oil powered saws; edgers; weedeaters; hand held and/or gas powered clippers/trimmers; blowers; utility trailers; and/or other gas/oil power tools.
Performs designed and/or landscaping work, and restores properties to best possible condition after sub-grade repairs; but is not limited to; hand pruning, trimming, shearing, clipping, digging, spraying, weeding, mulching, watering, and/or staking.
Maintains tree/palms and plants/vegetation with the use of fill dirt, soils, fertilizers/nutrients, mulch, water, rock, sun/shade, pruning and/or development, in order to a produce safe and an aesthetic landscape.
Removes weeds, debris, and/or unwanted vegetation from working areas, parks, rights-of-way, recreational facilities, public buildings, City properties, and other areas being worked or in Parks and Recreation-Beautification Division.
Performs regular and routine maintenance, cleaning, repairs and servicing of equipment used on the job; reports major equipment problems to the Landscape/Beautification Superintendent and/or Beautification Foreman.
This position may be required to work on a call-out basis in response to emergencies pertaining to trees/palms, equipment failures, unpredicted site changes and/or other urgency calls; maybe required to work mandatory overtime.
This position works in a cooperative effort with the Beautification Foreman and/or staff of the Parks and Recreation-Beautification Division and/or other City Departments.
Answers citizen and agency representative inquires when approached on the job; provides information on the nature of the work and schedule; refers more complex questions to immediate supervisor; fills out and files citizen complaint forms and/or reports.
Performs other duties as necessary.
High School Diploma or Completion of GED
Maintenance of a current/valid State of Florida Driver License which meets requirements outlined in the City's carrier (at no additional cost, or risk), and determined by the City to be an acceptable driving record history.
Able to communicate effectively in common English
Physical Requirements:

Ability to physically perform heavy manual labor, up to four hours, frequently (>3 hours per day).

Ability physically to walk up to three miles, sporadically (<3 hours per day); and, able to ascend and descend hills, berms, trees and/or ladders, up to twelve feet in height, sporadically, (<3 hours per day), and, able to reach comfortable over his/her head, frequently (<3 hours per day); and able to stoop, bend, crawl, squat, or other position in order to maintain trees/palms and plants/vegetation, constantly (<5 hours per day); and able to use hand held landscaping/maintenance tools and small power fools, sporadically (<3 hours per day); and, able to use medium equipment/vehicles, sporadically (3 hours per day.

Ability physically to lift up, push, or pull, up to 50 pounds to waist and/or head level, frequently (3< hours per day).

Ability to learn the operation of light truck, tractors and other equipment if assigned
Requirements:

Knowledge of the methods and/or standards within the Horticulture profession.

Knowledge with the identification of trees/palms and plants/vegetation that grow within the Nursery, landscaping, and/or in the area of the City.

Knowledge of City geography, facilities, structure, rights-of-way, and the sites of each.

Knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools used in the field.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skill in the landscaping/beautification installation, planting and transplanting trees/palms, plants/vegetation and weed control knowledge.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to laboring work.

Ability to learn the horticulture industry
Mathematics:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Work Environment:
Ability physically to work in extreme heat and work in extreme cold, to tolerate and/or work with insects, reptiles, fowl, mammals, toxic plants/trees, noxious fumes and ability/or excessive noise.
