Position Summary
The Nursing Informatics Specialist is accountable and responsible for utilizing skills in nursing, health science, computer science and information technology to help healthcare providers enter, store, retrieve and utilize large amounts of data as it applies to patient care. The Specialist aims to improve the accuracy of patient data and enable critical data analysis to improve documentation efficiency of overall patient care. The Nursing Informatics Specialist strives to improve patient outcomes by integrating evidence-based practice and standards of excellence into clinical practice. This position serves as a liaison for clinicians to facilitate a common understanding of information system needs, end user processes, interoperability, and alignment with organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities

Serves as an authority, provides expertise, and performs highly specialized work assignments in the areas of computer science, information science, nursing and informatics theory related to nursing practice, education, administration and research – in collaboration with other clinical informatics specialists.
- Plans and executes complex projects related to but not limited to: Design, development, selection, testing, implementation, and evaluation of new or modified informatics solutions, data structures, and decision-support mechanisms to support patients, health care professionals, and their information management and human-computer and human-technology interactions within health care contexts.
- Serves as a Nursing Informatics ‘consultant’; Translating nursing practice information between nurses and systems engineers, analysts or designers using a variety of techniques focused on user centered design to enhance patient outcomes.
- Collaborates with clinicians, nurses, and staff to understand clinical and operational workflows, obtain input to assist in the design and redesign of processes to fully optimize the use of healthcare applications for patient care and operations

Keeps abreast of relevant legislation, rules, regulations, tools, procedures, technical specifications and developments in the field of Nursing Informatics.
- Develops strategies, policies or procedures for introducing, evaluating or modifying information technology applied to nursing practice, administration, education or research.
- Provides clinical oversight to system application changes.
- Oversees standardization of clinical documentation.
- Identify, collect, analyze and summarize data when evaluating and designing informatics systems.
- Evaluates effects of system interventions for individuals and populations of patients/clients for clinical effectiveness, patient responses, efficiency, cost effectiveness, customer satisfaction and ethical considerations Identifies interpersonal, technological, environmental or system facilitators and barriers to the system implementation process
- Researches and automates patients' data in different clinical areas, assist in information technology (IT) training to stay up-to-date on interoperability’s and human-technology interactions.
- Acts as a liaison with other skilled Nursing Informatics Specialists throughout the state and nationwide.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Licensed as a Professional Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
- Clinical Specialty Certification in Nursing Informatics preferred at hire, but within two years of hire required.
- Five (5) years of clinical experience required, preferably in an academic health care setting.
- Demonstrated experience in evaluating, designing and implementing informatics programs, tools and medical devices that compliment and interface with electronic medical record systems required.
- Proficient communication skills (oral and written).
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demeanor that promote effective interaction with multi-disciplinary health care providers, academic departments, vendors, and others.
- Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems with on-the-job training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in nursing or information technology
- One (1) year experience in informatics training, nursing education, staff or professional development
- Clinical Experience in Perioperative or Procedural areas
