Job Summary:
Focusing on grades 1-6, this part-time teacher will develop the foundation of Spanish language skills and fluency. You will work with the head of school and department heads for our Lower School as well as the Spanish teacher for Middle and Upper School to put together vertically-aligned lesson plans between all grade levels.

Responsibilities will include:
- Partnering with the existing Spanish teacher, department heads, the Head Of School and others, develop and align a Spanish language lesson plans for grades 1-6. The goal is to help build real-world language familiarity and comprehension, both written and verbal, sufficient to set up students for greater fluency in grades 7 and beyond. All plans should be aligned with school goals and pedagogy.
- Working with other teachers and staff as needed.
- Attending scheduled meetings and events, including but not limited to department meetings, faculty meetings, all-school and family or community events and others as determined by the head of school and your department head.
- Communicating regularly and effectively with parents, peers and leadership on school and student issues, progress, challenges, successes, following the guidance of division heads.
- Evaluating student progress and performance, reporting on these periodically and as scheduled by your department head through school-defined systems and processes. Planning and conducting parent-teacher conferences during designated periods and as otherwise needed.
- Ensuring that lesson plans and your teaching style approach all of your students in an individualized manner, adapting your approach as needed to help educate every child to their fullest potential. Establishing clear objectives for students and providing the tools and lessons to attain them.
- Learning student and faculty handbooks and other school rules, and enforcement within school guidelines.
- Having a clear understanding of our school mission and values, and using these as the foundation for all planning, education and activity.
- Be a positive, active supporter of Selwyn School in the community, referring potential families to our school to help support enrollment growth.
- Other responsibilities and activities as directed by the Head of School and Division Heads.
General Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate will:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in Spanish, education or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university. Advanced degree(s) are a plus.
- Genuinely care for and empathize with children, creating a child-centric learning environment that better enables our students to learn and develop.
- Have at least 2 years experience as a classroom teacher, ideally in an independent school. Lower school teaching experience (1-6) is a plus.
- Be capable of designing lessons for Lower School students (grades 1-6) and teaching these lessons, both independently and as part of integrated school projects (e.g. lesson that integrates language science, math and/or technology).
- Have the ability to tailor an innovative, individualized educational approach to the particular needs of a class or student, delivering an education that effectively motivates every student to their potential and reflects our school’s mission and pedagogy. Be adaptive, able and motivated to learn new ways to approach the teaching needs of our students.
- When needed, help develop a class / program budget and manage expenses within this budget.
- Be able to work well in a floating classroom environment (teacher moves between classrooms each day).
- On and off campus, represent Selwyn School in a way that positively builds our brand image and motivates people to learn more about the school.
- Help develop and execute school events and programs as needed.
- Comply with all applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations regarding teaching lower school children.
- Welcome constructive performance reviews and new education strategies, working to implement ideas for improvement on an ongoing basis.
- Have unimpeachable ethics, honesty, respect for all and a deep desire to work on behalf of students and the people who serve them.
- Be dependable, committed to showing up as scheduled.
- Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as required by school leadership.
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Have and continuously develop current knowledge of Spanish and language education for grade 1-6 students.
- Serve as a leader and role model for students, exhibiting the character, understanding, demeanor, resilience and leadership expected of all professionals at our school. Learn our school mission and reflect it in all that you do.
- Effectively communicate with students, families and school administration and adapt as needed to meet the needs of our students, using the preferred tools required by the school. Engage parents regularly to help improve student development.
- Team productively with peers, leadership and the broader Selwyn family and alumni community. Be a positive, active participant inside and outside the class, working with other staff, parents and alumni on projects and events that promote the well-being of the school.
- Work on an Apple-centric IT platform and learn various online applications and systems.
- Comply with all staff, state and school requirements, including the Faculty and Staff Handbook. Represent Selwyn School well, on and off campus, including on all personal or professional social media, exhibiting professionalism, ethical behavior and respect. Maintain all records as required by the school and governmental licensing bureaus. Be on campus on the schedule required by the Head.
- Proactively identify and engage in self-development each year to improve effectiveness, working with department head to schedule teacher development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Qualifications:
All prospective employees must be able to clear a background check and other employee screening as required. A USA-valid and current drivers license and record in good standing is required.
Compensation:
Salary will be discussed with eligible candidates. This will be a part-time position, most likely 2 to 3 days/week.
