We are seeking a CAREER COUNSELOR - PART-TIME .5
JOB GOAL: Coordinate career awareness, exploration, and immersion experiences for students enrolled in Innovation Pathway Programs, and other internship experiences for students.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The position is responsible for coordinating the career education components of the Swampscott High School Innovation Pathway Program(s) and other internship work experiences available to students at SHS. The Innovation Pathway program(s) seek to create positive life outcomes for students interested in pursuing employment and/or higher education in specific industry sectors. SHS currently has programs in Advanced Manufacturing and Business & Finance and will be adding an IT program in Fall 2025. Pathways will include a specific scope and sequence of high school coursework, college courses, and a variety of career awareness, exploration, and immersion experiences, including internships at area businesses.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee students involved with Innovation Pathway programs and other internship/work-based learning experiences to ensure specific requirements are met.
- Coordinate students’ search, placement, and completion of internships and capstone projects by assisting the student with the following:
- Internship opportunity or capstone project search and selection
- Resume preparation (if applicable)
- Mentor identification
- Communication with an employer and/or site supervisor/mentor; coordination of interviews and receipt of the job description
- Administration of forms and paperwork associated with placements
- Keeping the lines of communication open between all parties.
- Monitoring attendance and performance of students in the placement
- Ensuring a safe, appropriate experience.
- Mediating concerns of students and employers, giving guidance as to a further course of action
- Coordinate with each student’s Guidance Counselor to develop student course schedules to meet requirements for the Pathway programs, MassCore, and SHS graduation.
- Ensure and track student's participation with the MyCAP/CCLR curriculum
- Organize transportation to students’ internship sites or North Shore Community College as needed
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and project partners.
- Other duties as assigned by the building Principal, Director of Guidance or Director of Teaching and Learning
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree, experience working with high school students, and two years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Applications from licensed educators are also encouraged.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships/communication with students, parents, school and town personnel, community-based organizations, and industry partners
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are required.
- Attention to detail is critical
- Ability to work independently, and prioritize and organize work
- Working knowledge of a variety of technology tools including Google Suite applications at the minimum
- Flexibility in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities.
- A valid Massachusetts driver’s license is required
Physical Requirements:
Minimal physical effort is required in performing duties under typical office conditions.
The ability to drive to transport students to and from an internship or local college sites.

Duties:
- Provide academic advising and career counseling to university students
- Analyze students' skills, interests, and educational backgrounds to help them make informed career decisions
- Mentor students on job search strategies, resume writing, and interview preparation
- Utilize systems such as Ellucian or PeopleSoft for student record management
- Conduct workshops and seminars on career-related topics
- Assist students in exploring various career paths and educational opportunities
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support student success
- Stay updated on current job market trends and industry demands
Skills:
- Experience in working with university students in a counseling or advising capacity
- Proficiency in academic advising techniques and career development theories
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills
- Ability to conduct mock interviews and provide constructive feedback
- Knowledge of educational programs and resources to guide students effectively
- Familiarity with Ellucian or PeopleSoft systems is a plus
- Excellent interpersonal skills to build rapport with students and stakeholders
