Job Description – Literacy Coach
The Literacy Coach position is a salaried, exempt position with a 12-month work schedule. The Literacy Coach plays a crucial role in helping students develop essential reading skills, ultimately improving their overall academic success. This position requires a deep understanding of phonics-only literacy instruction, strong communication skills, and a commitment to the success of struggling readers.
Overall Responsibilities
The Literacy Coach will assess students' reading abilities, design and implement targeted interventions, and monitor progress to help students achieve grade-level reading proficiency by working with the Reading Interventionists and creating individualized plans for each student.
The Literacy Coach is responsible for training the Reading Interventionists and will also support student achievement in reading by providing one-on-one or small group instruction in literacy to students who are struggling with reading and literacy skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Reading Interventionists to conduct thorough assessments of students' reading skills, including decoding, fluency, comprehension, and phonics.
- Use assessment data to identify areas of weakness and determine appropriate intervention strategies.
- Conduct Individualized Instruction:
- Develop and implement personalized reading intervention plans for students based on their specific needs.
- Utilize evidence-based reading interventions and instructional materials.
- Conduct Small Group Instruction:
- Provide small group or one-on-one instruction to students, focusing on improving reading skills and strategies.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Progress Monitoring:
- Continuously assess and track students' progress to adjust intervention plans as necessary.
- Maintain detailed records of student performance and intervention strategies.
- Collaboration:
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and parents to ensure a coordinated approach to student support.
- Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings when applicable.
- Parent and Community Engagement:
- Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers to provide updates on students' progress and offer guidance for reading support at home.
- Engage with the community to promote literacy initiatives and resources
Leadership
- Maintain a high personal standard consistent with the school’s Core Virtues, vision, mission and motto.
- Support the vision, policies, financial objectives and directives of the governing board.
- Support a positive school culture based on mutual respect and shared expectations.
- Regularly meet with the board chairman, Head of School, and Operations Manager to coordinate school activities and discuss outcomes and issues to ensure the long-term school success.
- Be willing to assist others as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field (Master's degree in Reading or Literacy Education preferred).
- Valid teaching certification preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in literacy instruction and reading intervention strategies.
- Strong understanding of various assessment tools and their use in diagnosing reading difficulties.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience and empathy when working with struggling readers.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other educators and parents.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
