JOB TITLE: Coordinator-Special Education
REPORTS TO: Director for Special Ed Services and Support

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Coordinator for Special Education, reporting to the Director of Special Education, is responsible for coordination and monitoring of special education instructional programs. This position is designed for the educator who seeks to positively impact services provided to students with disabilities by supporting specially designed instruction, provision of services with fidelity, developing teachers and staff, using data to make instructional decisions and collaborating with parents and colleagues. In addition to supporting student achievement, the Coordinator for Special Education plays a critical role in ensuring that district policies and procedures are developed, implemented and supported to promote compliance with federal, state and local policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in content and/or related field from an accredited college or university

Three years job related experience
-
Successful Administrative/Leadership experience at the campus or district level
Preferred:
-
Valid Texas teacher certification
-
Master’s Degree in content and/or related field from an accredited college or university

Supervisory and/or administrative certification
-
Three years’ experience as a special education teacher and/or in a campus special education role
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
-
Knowledge of federal and state special education law regarding special education and related services
-
Knowledge of state assessment guidelines
-
Understanding of the individual needs of students in special education
-
Ability to effectively communicate with parents of students in special education
-
Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
-
Ability to manage budget and personnel
-
Ability to coordinate services across district functions
-
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
-
Proficient in the use of Special Education data collection systems and data-based programs including Excel
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge of best practices in programs for students receiving special education services
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
-
Assists campus and district leadership with the interpretation of special education vision, rules, and regulations concerning the educational programming of students receiving special education and related services

Collaborates with general education curriculum and instruction to ensure that special education supports the overall district instructional program

Collaborates with special educators to ensure the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs

Supports instructional staff in the programs serving students with special needs

Assist with staff appraisals as assigned by the Executive Director or Director

Monitors special education data and documentation to ensure district compliance with state and federal guidelines regarding the services for students with disabilities

Maintains documentation required for State Performance Plan indicators, District Improvement Plans and Corrective Action Plans

Maintains data on student progress

Collaborates with related services staff to ensure IEP programming is designed and implemented

Monitors implementation of IEP programing and provides regular reports on status

Collaborates with campus administrators on issues regarding programming, implementation and compliance related to serving students eligible for special education supports and services

Collaborate with Assistant Superintendents on placement and programming for students with special needs.

Serves as a district liaison with contract agencies

Provides supportive assistance to personnel in instructional planning and the implementation of the individual education plan

Assist with developing and conducting professional learning for general education staff, special education staff and paraprofessionals

Serves as a liaison between campus personnel and the special education department
-
Problem solves parental concerns initiated by parents or administrators

Participates in member of staffing/admission, review and dismissal meetings as deemed necessary by the Special Education Director or Executive Director

Performs all other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling. This position will also require both traveling within the district. Mental demands: ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory of instructional programs; ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
