Location: Baghdad, Iraq
Overall Purpose of the Job: The Medical Lab Supervisor manages staff and oversees the laboratory department, including blood bank and walking blood bank operations across all project sites. This role ensures compliance with Joint Commission, COLA, CLIA, CMS, OSHA, HIPAA, and Quality Improvement standards, promoting excellence in laboratory practices and patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning and Management:
- Formulate short and long-range goals for the clinical laboratory unit in conjunction with Senior Management.
- Set priorities, assign responsibilities, and establish timetables for laboratory operations.
- Project future needs and formulate strategies consistent with projections.
- Protocol Development and Compliance:
- Develop and implement blood bank and walking blood bank protocols and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and hospital practices.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency through participation in laboratory Proficiency Testing programs.
- Operational Oversight:
- Manage the operational policies and procedures of the clinical laboratory department.
- Coordinate with medical staff on issues impacting laboratory services.
- Prepare weekly and monthly activity reports reflecting work volume, procedures, and output results.
- Quality Control and Maintenance:
- Develop and monitor laboratory quality control procedures.
- Oversee installation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations and maintain safety and infection control standards.
- Inventory and Supplies Management:
- Maintain sufficient inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Coordinate the preparation and procurement of chemicals, reagents, stains, and solutions.
- Patient Information and Care:
- Maintain and protect the confidentiality of patient information.
- Provide patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients.
- Support the hospital’s philosophy, objectives, and goals in line with the organization’s mission and vision.
- Team Collaboration and Professional Conduct:
- Foster constructive relationships within the laboratory and with other departments.
- Promote and practice positive customer and peer relations.
- Maintain professional conduct and support infection control policies.
- Personnel Management:
- Develop and monitor recruitment, selection, and orientation for new employees.
- Conduct performance appraisals, in-service training, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
- Monitor time and attendance, ensuring completion of required electronic timecards.
- Additional Responsibilities:
- Participate in Mass Casualty exercises and events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Profile:
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Proficiency in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.
- Ability to perform highly complex testing, interpret findings, perform calculations, and calibrate instrumentation.
- Knowledge of laboratory accreditation requirements (COLA, CLIA, CLIP).
- Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in English.
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment.
- Absence of color blindness (evaluated by a color vision screening examination).
Experience Preferred:
- Experience on a military site, working as a government subcontractor or prime contractor.
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in a hospital laboratory setting.
Education Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field with a demonstrated internship in an approved clinical laboratory training program.
- Current certification with a nationally recognized registry such as MT(ASCP).
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
Other Special Qualifications:
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English to effectively communicate.
- US Citizen.
- Ability to obtain a US DOS clearance.
- Must be able to relocate to Iraq.
- A valid passport is required and must be in possession prior to relocation, and maintained current during the stay in Iraq.
