The Head Start Coach will provide on-going coaching for Head Start teaching staff that supports effective teaching practices leading to positive outcomes for children. The Coach provides direction, leadership, coaching, training and mentoring to education staff to improve skills and professional competencies in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards and the educational curriculum, and assists staff in setting professional and educational goals.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains positive, supportive relationships with Head Start teachers and teacher assistants, supporting staff growth through the mentoring process.
- Coaches staff in the proper delivery of developmentally appropriate instruction.
- Provides guidance and input to the leadership team on staff training and technical assistance needs.
- Analyzes data and recommends instructional strategies to enhance child performance and ability to meet developmental milestones.
- Exhibits an understanding of Head Start School Readiness Goals in relation to educating families for the transition to Kindergarten.
- Collaborates with the Head Start management staff and family engagement staff to provide developmentally appropriate training for parents.
- Engages in Active Supervision Zoning when in classrooms or centers to ensure safe environments for all children;
- Assists staff with the implementation of Creative Curriculum, enduring fidelity of implementation across the program.
- Assists teaching staff and parents in developing strategies and techniques to help children with disabilities and/or challenging behaviors.
- Develops and maintains schedules for on-site visits and observations.
- Utilizes Practice Based Coaching model for the purpose of assessing needs, engaging in focused observations, and providing reflection and feedback in order to set goals and develop action plans.
- Provides constructive feedback and on-site support for teaching practices for the purpose of increasing teaching skills and competencies. This may include modeling, observing, and providing additional resources.
- Supports teacher implementation of the program’s approach to culturally responsive programming for the purpose of meeting the key language needs of all children as well as children learning English.
- Gathers and records information about teacher’s implementation of practices described in goals and action plans for the purpose of summarizing and analyzing data.
- Plans and presents individual and group trainings.
- Works in conjunction with staff to compile and interpret program data for the purpose of determining focus for mentoring and professional development as well as developing data related procedures as needed.
- Participates in substantial initial and ongoing professional development.
- Documents and reports instances of suspected and/or known child abuse as required by law.
- Follows Head Start and USDA nutrition guidelines if applicable.
- Participates in recruitment, enrollment, and outreach as directed by agency guidelines.
- Completes monthly reports required by funding and licensing authorities.
- Attends staff meetings, in-service training, etc.
- Attends community partnership meetings and trainings as necessary.
- Assures compliance with HSCFDC Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, Head Start Performance Standards, and WI Daycare Licensing Regulations.
- Maintains good relationships with other community agencies and partners.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with a minimum of three years of early childhood classroom experience.
- Participate in at least 25 hours of continuing education each year.
- Thorough knowledge of preschool child’s mental, emotional and social development process.
- Ability to work with preschool children as well as with parents.
- Ability to plan and direct the work of others, and to secure their cooperation.
- Demonstrated computer literacy in email and word processing applications.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
- Ability to demonstrate creative problem solving skills, patience, good judgment, and resourcefulness.
- Preferred candidate will have experience working with adults.
- CLASS Certified, or willing to obtain certification upon hire.
- Experience with Pyramid Model Training, and willing to obtain PMT certification upon hire.
- Completed Inter-rater Reliability Training, or willing to complete upon hire.
- Prefer knowledge and usage of ChildPlus and Teaching Strategies Gold.
- Ability to pass criminal background and FBI fingerprinting check, and health screening.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and access to an insured motor vehicle
Unique Work Schedule: This position works 9 hours a day, Monday through Thursday, with a 4 hour workday on Fridays. One Friday a month is a paid day off in addition to established paid time off benefits. This position is required to travel on a daily basis to Head Start Centers in La Crosse, Monroe and Vernon Counties, as needed.
