The Cloquet Mill, located on the banks of the St. Louis River, produces some of the highest quality heavyweight web and sheet fed products in the world. The original mill opened in 1898 and has undergone a variety of changes and improvements over the years, most-recently (2013) to convert the pulp mill into a producer of Verve, a dissolving wood pulp used primarily for the textile markets. With the conversion, the pulp mill is now able to swing between dissolving wood pulp and Kraft pulp based on market needs. With a focus on responsible and sustainable operations, the Cloquet Mill is focused on energy savings improvements which have led to local, state, and national environmental recognition.

Major Job Responsibilities:
Capital Projects (35%)
- Work with other engineers and vendors in cross functional teams for design, installation, and commissioning of new process equipment and larger process and/or equipment changes. Basically, provide in-house control system integration.
- Design and configure Honeywell Experion DCS Control Systems changes
- Design and configure Rockwell PLC Control Systems changes
- Design and configure Drives/IO changes
- Write and review Functional Descriptions for new systems
- Design and configure Operator HMI graphics and interface
- Configure new PI Data historian tags and interfaces
- Work with area process engineers to train operators and supervisors on new control system modifications.
Process Optimization (35%)
- Initiate, facilitate and implement changes in processes and procedures that reduce repair labor and material costs while improving safety and service.
- Perform control system tuning and troubleshooting to maintain production and optimize process performance.
- Work with cross functional teams as part of the mill Lean Six Sigma program.
- Be aware of technological advances and investigate how they can be adapted to improve the plant operation.
- Provide basic level process analysis and modeling. Work with the advanced analytics team for more in-depth analysis and modeling.
- Design and Implement Advanced Process Controls.
Process and Maintenance Troubleshooting (30%)
- Provide technical assistance to the mill operating and maintenance departments to maintain a 24/7 plant operation.
- Assist other engineers, maintenance E&I, technicians in the coordination of their activities as it pertains to the mill automation systems.
- Maintain controls system hardware and software.
- Programming reviews and controls modifications.
- Help Train E&I Technicians on PLC, DCS, and Drive systems
Split of work load will vary based on annual capital approved projects.
Entry Requirements:
- B.S. in electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering preferred.
- Or equivalent education with minimum of 3-5 years maintenance experience with concentration in system integration, DCS and PLC configuration.
