HJF is seeking a Technical Writer to be responsible for researching, planning, writing and editing content for internal and external audiences through various communications channels. Primary goals for these activities include building awareness of internal initiatives, educating staff about requirements and deadlines related to their employment, and promoting HJF and program successes to the general public.
This position will be part of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Lab Support Services. The DPAA is the US Department of Defense Agency responsible for the recovery and identification of fallen US service members from WWII to the gulf war. Its mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting of missing personnel to their families and the nation. To accomplish this, the DPAA executes recovery missions worldwide, and recovered material is analyzed in the state-of-the-art DPAA laboratory.
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.
Responsibilities:
- Provides substantive, structural, and copy edits of analytical manuscripts for organization, completeness, accuracy, and compliance with language, style, and formatting.
- Works closely with Agency historians, archaeologists, and analysis throughout the editing process.

Develops style guides that adhere to Agency standards.

Reviews the reports for compliance with the language, style, and formatting requirements of the Indo-Pacific Style Guide and SOPs.

Edits to improve sense, logic, organization, flow, and accuracy; clarify language; improve conciseness; reduce wordiness; and fit space requirements.

Corrects all grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors.

Verifies all facts, tables, figures, and sources for accuracy.

Confirms the accuracy and consistency of names, dates, and technical information.

Advises the Indo-Pacific Directorate on revising report templates to optimize efficiency and functionality.

Communicates queries and comments tactfully to authors.

Utilizes online-editing tools in Adobe and Microsoft Office products.

Works closely with analysts, from the early stages of manuscript development through the entire publishing process, including final reviews of text, graphics, and other formats for scientific products to help them organize and refine analytic content into an effective product.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, History, Philosophy, Liberal Arts, or Professional Writing is required.

Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated English language proficiency with strong written and oral communications skills.

Proven experience in editing and formatting technical reports and papers and delivering finished products on tight deadlines.

Possession of exceptional writing and grammar skills, including mastery of grammar, word usage, spelling, and punctuation.

Strong written and oral communication skills evidenced by publication, technical report, and conference presentation record.

Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.

Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
Physical Capabilities

Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
Work Environment

This position is primarily telework but will require periodic travel to the DC office.
Some HJF employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination or an approved religious or medical accommodation will be required.
