Job Title : Maintenance Worker I

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Participates in the repair and maintenance of city streets, water distributions system, waterways, bridges, parks, rights-of-way, watersheds, grounds, and/or other city property as assigned; performs entry-level equipment operation.
SUPERVISION:
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Foreman and indirect supervision of team or participatory leader.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Participates in the construction, repair, cleaning, and/or maintenance of city streets, parks, water distribution system, grounds, right-of-ways, facilities, and/or property.
2. Operates and transports dump and flat-bed trucks, snow plows, salt spreaders, rubber tire loaders, backhoes, tractor mowers, asphalt patching units, and brush chippers in the repair, cleaning, construction, and maintenance of city streets, water system, drainage ways, parks, buildings and grounds.
3. Drives vehicles and equipment with both standard and automatic transmissions to a variety of work sites.
4. Installs, removes and repairs residential and commercial water meter services.
5. Constructs and repairs water mains; cleans and flushes water mains; repairs mains, valves and fire hydrants
6. Picks up trash, rocks, leaves, limbs, debris, and concrete blocks and loads into containers or dump trucks for removal.
7. Cuts weeds or brush, grinds stumps and brush; trims tree branches with chain saw from trees; operates riding tractors on steep slopes and amid traffic with implements such as mowers, tillers, tree spades, augers, spreaders, front-end loaders and plows.
8. Paints with a brush, roller, or airless paint gun for various projects; performs grout work; installs drainage tiles and related materials and repairs holes in and around City waterways; applies pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers.
9. Assists in removing, forming, and placing concrete; rakes and levels asphalt for construction projects.
10. Utilizes necessary equipment including hand and power tools such as saws, drills, drill press, power grinders, pumps, generators, jackhammers, asphalt tamper, patch roller, etc. in completing assigned work.
11. Performs preventative maintenance work and safety inspections on a variety of equipment and reports deficiencies.
12. Performs minor electrical, carpentry, masonry and plumbing repair work as assigned.
13. Reads and applies instructions and labels for product and equipment operation.
14. Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and procedures.
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:
1. Services and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment.
2. Performs duties of other comparable level positions as required.
3. Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
4. Attends workshops, conferences, seminars, and other training for professional development purposes.
5. Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Any combination of education, training, and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge
Principles, procedures, and equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, cleaning or repair of public roads, parks, grounds, water systems, agricultural properties or other related projects.
Abilities
Participate in the work of a crew performing in general maintenance of streets, grounds, water distribution facilities and equipment; operate equipment such as rubber tire loaders, dump and flat-bed trucks, snow plows, salt spreader, tractors with PTO implements, mowers, hand and power tools, and vehicles in a manner consistent with safety principles; follow oral and written instructions; read and interpret a variety of information such as manuals and schematic drawings; accurately document and maintain appropriate records, logs and reports; communicate verbally effectively; deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public; present an overall professional image; model and promote acceptance and respect for differences among employees and citizens; perform as a member of a team in carrying out City's stated mission and philosophy; perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of others.
Experience, Education, and Training
Some experience in the operation of dump trucks, front-end loaders or comparable equipment operation; or maintenance and/or construction work comparable to work completed in the Public Works Department in such areas as street/road work, grounds work; building or water utility pipe line work.
Physical Requirements
Performs bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, twisting, kneeling, and reaching both to ground level and overhead; lifts and carries up to 100 pounds and/or pushes and pulls up to 150 pounds as required; holds and grips objects; subject to working in awkward positions and periods of prolonged walking, sitting, or standing. Must have ability to enter confined spaces for some assignments.
Working Environment
Primarily outdoors with exposure to dust and pollen; subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions; susceptible to mechanical and electrical hazards associated with equipment and wiring; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and other safety hazards due to working in and around traffic, or depending upon assignment working with and around farm animals and agricultural properties; subject to constant and extreme noise, poor lighting and ventilation, fumes, and odors. Must be able to work in confined spaces.
Licensing/Certification
Must possess and maintain at minimum a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement. A Distribution System I certification as issued by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is preferred.
Miscellaneous Requirements
Must pass pre-employment drug testing and submit to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws. May be required to work weekends or a variety of shifts. Subject to emergency call-in.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
