Engineering Positions; Flexible Part-Time Schedules
Smith & Loveless Inc. is hiring for available Engineering roles for on-site work in our Lenexa, KS facility. These positions are an excellent opportunity for a person who wants to return to working or is only available on an occasional basis. They are a great way to stay busy, engage with others and utilize the skills you have developed in your career. These roles provide part-time and flexible schedules to supplement our project work. The schedules can have negotiable work hours that are within our standard 7:45 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday schedule. Hourly Pay will be based on previous experience.
Candidates shall be Degreed Engineers or Degreed Engineering Technicians from an accredited university or technical engineering program. We have opportunities available for the following Engineering disciplines:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Structural Engineering
- Materials Engineering
- Computer Designs; CFD and FEA development and analysis
- Instrumentation and Controls
We also have opportunities for Technical Writers with a background in developing Operations & Maintenance manuals for products and machinery.

This is an excellent opportunity for a retired Engineer or technician to help design pumping, headworks and wastewater treatment systems. We are a manufacturing company, so one of the many benefits is that you are able to see an idea develop through the design phase into prototypes and to an actual product while in the same facility, while you are collaborating and interacting with other engineers and the production team during the process.
The ideal candidate would also be able to understand or have experience with 3D modeling (Autodesk Inventor), AutoCAD and other related engineering design software.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The engineering candidate, under the direction of an Engineering Manager or Supervisor, would work closely with and assist other designers, drafters, and engineers to create new product designs, develop custom designs for specific customer projects, develop manufacturing documents (including drawings, Bills of Material, and/or calculations), review completed work or vendor submissions and interface with the manufacturing groups to complete the designs and projects. Broadly speaking, the incumbent will provide guidance and expertise to aid in design engineering functions including:
- Completing production and design projects while coordinating with supervisors and other departments.
- Direct the creation of, review or build 3D models.
- Direct the creation of, review or building 2D drawings with proper dimensions and annotations for production to occur accurately.
- Modifying, preparing, and checking submittals, manufacturing and production drawings, and Bills of Materials for the control and distribution of Company products.
- Review and interpretation of applicable codes and the review of designs and calculations for compliance.
- Development and/or checking of engineering calculations.
- Working closely with other designers, drafters, engineers, application engineers, and engineering managers with a team spirit to produce excellent models, drawings, and Company products.
- Moving flexibly from project to project as business needs dictate to fulfill orders or complete projects in a timely fashion.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 10 years of experience as a Design Engineer in a manufacturing or consulting environment.
- Knowledge of, or working experience with 3D modeling, AutoCAD and common drafting practices.
- Knowledge of structural steel designs is a plus.
- Knowledge and experience with interpreting structural, welding, mechanical and electrical design codes is a plus.
- Knowledge of and experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and evaluations is a plus.
