Description and Mission
Mountain Village is a public Nature-based, Montessori school, engaging students in experiences that integrate natural environments with the Montessori curriculum, igniting achievement in academic, social-emotional and physical development.
Mountain Village Charter School, a public, tuition-free, elementary charter school, opened in Plymouth, NH in fall 2014. The curriculum combines Montessori methods with a nature-based philosophy and approach, offering the experience of both a Montessori classroom and significant outdoor time each day.
Position Summary
The role of the Elementary Assistant is to support the Lead Teacher in various aspects of the classroom; to help foster the development of the children intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned)
- Support the Lead Teacher as directed in matters regarding classroom, curriculum and students
- Provide instruction to students at the request of the Lead Teacher or in absence of the Lead Teacher.
- Help maintain attendance and other written or electronic records.
- Assist in drop off and pick up procedures at arrival and dismissal times as assigned
- Supervise the class at lunch and/or recess period and other times when the teacher is out of the room.
- Support classroom events and trips including, but not limited to: day trips, camping trips, dinner meetings, presentations, and performances
- Assist in preparing and maintaining the classroom environment and materials
- Observe student behaviors and steps in when appropriate, communicating student progress or concerns with the Lead Teacher
- Maintain order and manage the class in a subtle and non-disruptive manner during lessons; work with the Lead Teacher to preserve and protect lessons
- Provide consistent support for students on remedial skills
- Act in a way that exemplifies and models the school’s expectations of grace and courtesy
- Assist in students’ development of independence
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and professional development activities
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Successful elementary-aged experience
- Montessori classroom experience preferred
- Outdoor education, outdoor leadership or nature mentoring experience preferred
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty to enhance curriculum and community
- Commitment to professional development and best practices in education
- Commitment to meeting the needs of each child
- First aid and CPR Certification
- Proficient in the Use of Technology
- Open mind, sense of humor, and excitement about being part of an innovative, start-up school
