The North Star Reporter is seeking applicants for a part-time general assignment reporter position. This person will work 20-25 hours a week to cover news and events in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. Overtime in the event of emergencies (such as police and fire incidents, other breaking news, etc) will be compensated.
Job duties include covering government meetings, events and conducting interviews for news and feature stories, as well as photographing community events and sports games. It is expected that the reporter will publish 3-4 stories a week. In addition, the reporter will be responsible for weekly police log reports and some photo-only assignments, as needed.
This is an in-person job and cannot be done remotely — no exceptions.
This role reports to Editor Max Bowen and Publisher Jeffrey Andrade, and will sometimes collaborate with the advertising department. Weekly meetings will be held with the editor to plan coverage, and the reporter is expected to come up with their own assignments.
This role is essentially the “face of the paper” and as such, this person is expected to be familiar in town. This means attending government meeting, sports games, and events in person and getting to know the community well. For this reason, good people skills and an outgoing attitude are important.
This position does not have set hours and includes working evenings and weekends. Applicants with other jobs or freelance roles are expected to manage their schedules so as to make this job a priority. Because this includes covering breaking news, such as fires or police responses, the applicant will need to be available to cover these. The ideal applicant should have experience working for weekly or daily newspapers, working on deadline and good time management skills. Networking skills are important for this role. Training will be offered as needed. Photography skills are a must and it is preferred that the applicant have their own camera.
