Status: 80 hours per two week pay period
Shift: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Job Summary
Reviews the medical record to assign diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with the Standards of Ethical Coding as stated by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), in compliance with ICD10 coding guidelines, CMS guidelines and other regulatory requirements. These codes are used for billing, statistics and reporting data. Proper coding is essential to collecting optimal reimbursement for services.

Essential Job Functions
- Extract data from the medical record to apply ICD10 diagnosis, CPT, HCPCS and ICD10 PCS (inpatient only) codes.
- Will add charge codes for professional charges, medication administration and other services as needed. Most other charge codes are dropped via provider documentation.
- Comply with medical coding guidelines and policies.
- Identify documentation deficiencies and work with providers to resolve them.
- Work with the Patient Accounts department to resolve claim denials in a timely manner.
- Promotes and maintains confidentiality when dealing with data related to patients, providers, co-workers and any other facility information.
- Provide education and feedback to HRMC employees on workflows related to the medical record/coding process.
- Work with insurance follow-up staff to resolve denials.
Other Job Duties
- Participates in Quality, Risk and Utilization Management activities.
- Create reports/pull data as requested.
- Assist in the orientation and development of personnel and students.
- Continuously working on professional self-development. Ensures that they are knowledgeable about advances, changes and new regulations that may affect their job duties.
- Continuously reviewing and improving processes and workflow.
- Assist other departments and performs other duties as needed/able to.
- Complies with all HRMC policies and federal/state regulations.
- Always maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Utilize interpretation resources as needed (via phone/computer or in-person)
Requirements
- RHIT, RHIA or AHIMA/AAPC-issued certified coding certification required
- At least 2 years of experience in a medical facility preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Maintain a minimum of a 95% accuracy rate.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology required.
- Requires excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office package including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Teams and Microsoft Outlook.
Essential Physical Demands
- May require light lifting. Occasional lifting of boxes of medical records
- Ability to sit/work on computer for long periods of time
- May accompany patients to other department/assist with transporting patients in wheelchairs
