Controller for Real Estate Developer:
Join a fast-growing real estate development company located in Sussex, WI, but with properties around Southeastern Wisconsin and Southwestern Florida. In this position, you will have the opportunity to assist in all aspects of our business, from construction to property management, including but not limited to managing the financial aspects of the company and its family members. We’re seeking someone who is detail-oriented, can work independently and collaboratively, and is able to work with and lead a small accounting team.
Responsibilities:
●Produce relevant financial reports/statements monthly by property, monitoring cash flows, managing budgets and forecasts, reconciling accounts payable and accounts receivable
●Coordinate all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll
●Manage all accounting records including maintaining the chart of accounts, ensuring the accuracy of the general ledger, and preparing journal entries
●Interact directly with team members, owners, and outside advisors to develop and implement proactive tax planning strategies.
● Stay abreast of current tax law and identify tax opportunities
● Assist with construction draws when needed
● Oversee the monthly closing of all entities including construction
● Analyze financial data and make recommendations to improve efficiency or reduce costs
● Annual year end reconciliation process including CAM
● Analyze 1031 exchange opportunities
Provide required tax information to tax advisors for compliance purposes as needed
Critical tasks:
Understanding the Entity and Financial Reporting Requirements: Reviewing the entity’s legal documents such as operating agreements, management agreements, and loan documents to understand the financial reporting requirements. Understanding the operations and nature of the entity.
Ensuring Compliance with Accounting Standards: Ensuring compliance with accounting standards, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Managing the Accounting Team: Managing the accounting team, including hiring, training, and supervising staff.
Providing Financial Analysis: Providing financial analysis to support business decisions, including analyzing financial data, identifying trends, and making recommendations.
Maintaining Relationships with External Parties: Maintaining relationships with external parties, including legal advisors, tax advisors, and lenders.
Qualifications:
●5+ years of experience within the construction or property management industry
●Accounting degree with a CPA or CPA eligible designation (knowledge of TIF a plus)
● Basic understanding of income tax laws including business entity tax return fundamentals such as but not limited to fixed asset segregation and depreciation
● Strong general ledger knowledge gained through experience within an organization that maintains GAAP based accrual accounting preferred
● Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including ability to articulate concerns in a concise and timely manner
● High degree of detail orientation and conscientiousness concerning the timely completion of assignments
● Desire to take ownership and responsibility for work product.
