We are a multispecialty surgical center looking for a full time PACU nurse. Day shift position with hours varying from day to day.
POSITION SUMMARY
All patients who have been subjected to general, regional block, or spinal anesthesia will be cared for postoperatively by a Registered Nurse who is qualified and competent to provide such care.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The RN PACU:
- Is directly accountable to the Director of Nursing
- Works in collaboration with the Medical Staff, nursing colleagues, surgical techs and orderly
- Directs non-professional staff
- QUALIFICATIONS
- Current RN state licensure
- Minimum of two years of recent post-anesthesia, critical care, ER or recovery care experience
- Current BCLS and ACLS certification required
- Current PALS or obtained within three months of hire
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The RN PACU must be able to engage in physical activities on a daily basis. As a direct patient care provider, the RN PACU will maintain:
- Hepatitis immunization or documented refusal to be vaccinated.
- Evidence of negative TB or negative chest x-ray.
- Ability to maintain extensive standing, moderated sitting, retracting and assisting in the transfer of patients with appropriate number of personnel and/or devices.
- Physical ability to perform CPR.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 20lbs, instrumentation or equipment.
- RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assessment:**
- The PACU RN is required to collect, interpret, record and communicate pertinent data that is relevant to the patient’s care appropriate to: pediatric, adult and geriatric patients in the PACU. Data is concurrently assessed for optimum patient care and planned discharge of the patient. Assessment shall include:
- Verifications of the patient’s preoperative vital signs and general conditions.
- Verification of the operative procedure, site, surgeon and anesthesiologist.
- Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with resource persons. (MDA, surgeon, preoperative RN, and Ancillary personnel).
- Uses data collected to assess the care of patient based the health status and needs of the patient.
- Revises plan of care, as needed, to accommodate patient’s needs.
- Recovery based on continuing assessment of the patient.
- Coveys the plan of care to other members of the surgical team.

- Planning:
- Follows the standards of care for post op nursing care along with the preferences of surgeons and anesthesiologists when planning the post op care.
- Monitors the necessary equipment and supplies for the PACU. Equipment is checked and found to be in good working condition.
- Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with resource person (physicians, anesthesiologists, and other member of the health team).
- Uses data collected to formulate nursing diagnosis about the health status and needs of the patient.
- Revises plan of care as needed based on continuing assessment of the patient.
- Conveys the plan of care to other members of the surgical team.
- Implementation
- Pediatrics, adults and geriatric patients meeting their physical and psychological needs:
- The PACU RN provides direct care of patients appropriate to needs of patient.
- The PACU RN utilizes data collected to plan for post op nursing care appropriate to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
- Identifies priorities and executes nursing care accordingly.
- Provides emotional support and comfort measures.
- Gives information or explanation to patient’s and their families as warranted.
- Ensures and respects the patient’s rights, privacy and dignity.
- Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the postoperative phase.
- Maintains the intravenous infusion, may start new IVs as needed, discontinues IVs before discharge, record and delivers amount of solutions as ordered.
- Administers medications and oxygen, as needed; documents all administration
- Recognizes symptoms of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress and/or other impending crisis; initiates emergency response.
- Participates in the evaluation of new supplies and equipment
- Coordinates the activities of other health care professionals and ancillary staff in assisting the patient for discharge.
- Instructs the patient in self-care and in-home treatment of postoperative symptomatology.
- Documents all postoperative care.
- Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurrence noted during the postoperative phase of recovery.
- Surveys patient record and recovery for QA, as needed
- Completes post-discharge contact and call evaluations
- Properly cares for and disinfects equipment and furniture in the recovery areas
- Reports and labels out-of-service equipment malfunction and documents return to service of equipment
- Evaluation:
- Nursing interventions and modifies the nursing care plan to collaborates with other disciplines to revise the patient care plan perdiatric, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.

Pay: $50.00 - $52.00 per hour
