Fire Protection Code Consultant
A Fire Protection Code Consultant with NRG is an expert in NFPA and Building Code requirements, and will work with our customers to develop fire and life safety solutions for a wide array of projects. We work on commercial, retail, industrial and other types of projects. This role is responsible to review site or project conditions, interact with customers to determine project fire and life safety criteria, interact with jurisdictions to negotiate and consult, and communicate effectively with all on findings/ results. Travel will be required for the role as our work takes place throughout North America, although most travel for each NRG team member is within a specific region. Travel averages approximately two nights per week.
This role is primarily the application of codes and standards in the review of proposed building structures and operations. Best suited for this role are code consultants who have been responsible for high level fire protection issues for major companies, have worked in the fire prevention division of major fire authorities and jurisdictions, and professional degreed engineers who have a primarily fire protection code based background.
Individuals whose backgrounds are primarily fire fighting, EMT, health workers, safety workers, fire systems inspectors, or fire systems installers will not typically be who we are looking for in this role.
Job Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or related field, preferred although not required.
· CFPS and other certifications preferred or as deemed necessary.
· Minimum of 5 years of engineering, consulting, and/or code consulting work related to core business.
· Competencies: Full knowledge of engineering/consulting/design requirements for company operations. Strong working knowledge of building and fire codes and NFPA standards. Strong understanding of fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, fire pump systems. Experience may include work as a Fire Official with a local or state fire authority, or as a consultant or engineer with a fire protection consulting or engineering company similar to NRG.
· Required: Microsoft Office Suite, engineering/ design tools.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to adhere to engineering and design standards. Ability to stay ahead of the curve on product development, changing standards, and customer expectations with respect to core company offerings. Ability to work within tight project timeframes and communicate effectively with customers. Ability to work fluidly with fire officials and customers in the determination and negotiation of protection criteria. Ability to write clear and concise reports detailing/ outlining arguments and agreements.
