Primary Responsibility: Immediate responsibility for the direct care and safety of the youth in the residence through Trauma-informed approaches
Essential Responsibilities:
- Build a positive and supportive relationship with each youth under their supervision
- Monitor the academic needs, school placement, and progress of children in consultation with the child’s teacher; work with teachers for after-school educational activities and homework. Know and follow all IEP goals, and Gateway treatment plans
- Make regular entries in students’ records (restraint reports, body charts, incident reports, service notes, daily logs) describing the youth’s progress and significant events in accordance with licensing regulations by the Department of Early Education and Care and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Arrange daily routines for programs for youth rising and retiring, meals, school attendance, clothing, arrange or provide recreational or special activities; responsible for the physical care and maintenance of the home occupied by the group
- Participate and advocate for youth in weekly Team Supervision, case conferences and team meetings
- Assist youth in developing appropriate daily living skills, recreational activities and where appropriate teach and reinforce PAYA learning
- Work cooperatively with other childcare counselors so that together they present a clear, stable, and consistent trauma-informed relationship with the youth and his family. Provide a secure, interesting setting, representing acceptance, understanding and love with a positive sense of security
- Keep the Supervisor informed regarding group activities, the progress of individual youth, the particular problems they might have, especially those which involve other staff members, and all significant events within the group.
General Responsibilities
- Report and properly document to the Supervisor in the event of any significant injury, runaway, and/or serious problem or concerns
- Assist in maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and overall appearance of the residence
- Participate in all mandated training and other training opportunities for both required training hours (minimum of 24 hours annually) and ongoing professional development
- Drive youth to appointments (i.e. medical, dental, recreational activities) when necessary
- Respect, maintain and honor confidentiality
- Help to develop the spiritual and cultural growth of the youth according to designated culture and religious affiliation
- Assist the youth in management of their money received as earnings, allowance, and gifts
- Inform and collaborate with the Clinician regarding youth’s response to home/family contacts
- Responsible for knowing and implementing all of Nazareth’s policies and procedures on a daily basis
- Completes all other duties as assigned
In all areas, perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Degree Required; Associate’s degree preferred
- One year child care experience preferred
- Valid driver’s license preferred
- Must maintain a satisfactory annual competency and performance evaluation
Certifications:
- Trained in MAP, First Aid, C.P.R., C.P.I. Non-violent Crisis Intervention, and all other required trainings
- Maintain active certification in First Aid, CPR, CPI Non-violent Crisis Intervention and attend all other required trainings
Skill/Abilities:
- Ability to like, respect and understand youth

- Ability to understand and implement Trauma-informed Care principles and conduct
- Ability to participate actively and constructively in Supervision and accept feedback
- Ability to work as part of the milieu treatment team
- Ability to read, write and speak English and write legible, understandable communication
- Ability to deal with and communicate with youth, parents, co-workers, interns and visitors to our program, with maturity and sensitivity
- Ability to interact and consult with the total staff regarding routine schedule of the program and with reference to specific problems and/or needs of the youth
- Ability to be firm and consistent in implementing behavioral and safety plans
- Ability to be consistent in implementing daily routine
- Ability to demonstrate maturity & deal effectively with emotionally demanding situations
- Ability to observe behaviors, interactions of youth and communicate to all team members
- Must be able to understand and carry out directions and instructions
Physical/Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Bilingual capacity in English/Spanish an asset.
- Must be able to communicate effectively by telephone and in person. Must be able to record clear messages and keep accurate records
- Must be able to bend, assist in lifting a person, twist and sit on floor for implementation of daily schedule.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to physically escort and physically restrain residents.
- Must have manual dexterity and motor skills to grasp and lift objects.
- Must be able to bend and lift to purchase and/or access program supplies.
- Must be able to walk and climb stairs for entry and mobility throughout the buildings, which may have several levels of stairs as well as for program implementation.
- Must be able to walk, run and hike, swim and join in other physical activities with individuals.
- Must demonstrate maturity and ability to deal effectively with emotionally demanding and stressful situations.
- Must be able to observe behavior, interactions between individuals and relate observations to the appropriate person.
- Must be able to understand and carry out directions and instructions.
- Must be able to travel to various sites to attend meetings, conferences, and seminars.
- Must continue to achieve a satisfactory competency and performance evaluation annually.
