Job Summary
The CNC Machinist sets up and operates conventional, CNC and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the following duties. Develops all aspects of CNC CAM programs either from CAD renderings or from scratch including tool paths, tool selection, speeds etc.
Responsibilities
- Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Designs and/or develops holding fixtures for machine beds.
- Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, and grinders.
- Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
- Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
- Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
- Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
- Installs machine replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
- Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks on machines.
- Orders tooling and materials for the department.
Education/ Experience
- Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or three-years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum Qualifications
· At least three years of experience working in a manufacturing environment with CNC Machines
Skills
- Knowledge of 5S.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Thorough knowledge of CAD/CAM software and metal cutting machinery.
- Programs, sets up, and operates CNC milling, lathe, or other machinery according to blueprint specifications.
- Utilizes G or M code and CAM software (MasterCAM,CAMWorks or others).
- Tests accuracy of settings and programs.
- Inspects parts using precision measuring tools.
- Operates machines and monitors operation and control panel displays to detect malfunctions and make adjustments.
- Follows all safe work practices & safety rules.
- Trains and mentors other machinists in writing and modifying G-Code programs.
- Independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors.
- Has gained full proficiency in a broad range of activities related to the job.
