GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Principal and/or Dean, the Elementary Classroom Assistant supports the Lead Teacher and students in grades 1-6th in an environment that nurtures the children's academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual needs; in an environment that challenges each child to reach his/her fullest potential, in accordance with the Montessori philosophy and California State Education curriculum benchmarks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Assist students toward self-directed learning and normalization.
- Model authenticity and respect in interactions with students and adults
- Support children to solve problems independently when possible
- Follow school procedures when conflicts or injuries arise
- Communicate clearly in both written and spoken
- Work to implement Lead Teacher’s plans and systems
- Continuously maintain awareness of children and safety
- Respond appropriately to a variety of situations calmly
- Help maintain the classroom and organizational needs
- Supervise lunch and recess
- Keep classroom materials stocked and supplied
- Support supervision of PE
- Support record keeping, daily attendance, and other organization systems
- Support in correcting and editing of student work as needed
- Assist students toward self-directed learning and normalization
- Participate in professional activities designated by the Principal, which may include workshops, curriculum development, retreats, meetings, grade reporting, planning, and other professional pursuits.
- Attend all pre-announced staff meetings and professional sessions, including staff, department, committee, and evening parent meetings.
- Work to develop close and effective relationships with families, including opportunities to discuss and understand the child’s progress
- Share in the rotation of arrival and dismissal responsibilities with other site staff
- Work effectively as a member of a team.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years in education programs
- AA degree or higher is highly preferred but not required.
- Flexible and positive.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all affairs.
- Ability to work with changing priorities, regulations and deadlines.
- Punctual and communicative.
Physical Requirements:
- Work in person on the campus for 190 workdays per school year.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment.
- Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
- Bending at the waist, kneeling and crouching to assist students.
- Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
