The Conestoga Crew Club from Boathouse Row in Philadelphia is seeking a Head Coach for the 2024-2025 season for the Conestoga High School competitive rowing team.
About Our Team: The Conestoga Crew Club (CCC) is a 26 year-old association affiliated with Conestoga Senior High School in Berwyn, PA. We are a competitive program with a winning tradition. Our program focuses on sculling. CCC has between 40 and 60 high school rowers (grades 9-12). We have both boys and girls teams, and field freshman, novice, junior varsity and varsity boats in the Philadelphia area. In addition, we participate in USRowing Regional and National competitions. We row out of Bachelors Barge Club on Boathouse row along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Culture: We are a highly competitive team that trains 5-6 days a week. We train hard and we train together, so that we can bring our best boats to each regatta. Although winning is our goal, we get there through sustained effort and focus on growing and improving. We support each other to be the best we can be as individuals, as a boat and as a team.
Coaching Needs: We are seeking a true leader who can guide the rowers and Assistant Coaches to continue Stoga Crew’s deep tradition. This requires passion, a love for the sport and an appreciation of how to lead a team of coaches and rowers that support each other.
The Head Coach is responsible for coaching and character development. The coach provides direction to student-athletes to help them achieve a high level of skill, as well as an appreciation for sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork that is essential to rowing.
Scope includes:
- Spring and Fall competitive teams; practice 5-6 days per week
- Compete in 4-8 regattas each season (spring and fall)
- Winter conditioning program, typically 4-6 days/week beginning in January
- Travel for Regattas including multiple days for SRAA and Nationals
Qualifications
- Passion for Rowing: Enthusiastic and dedicated to coaching student athletes in rowing.
- Experience: Collegiate experience rowing/coxing
- Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead a team and mentor coaching staff effectively.
- Flexible Availability: Able to attend all practices at Conestoga High School and Boathouse Row from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and be present for weekend races/regattas.
- Safe Launch Operation: Competent in driving and operating a motorized coaching launch safely.
- Certified Coach: Hold a US Rowing Level 1 or above Coaching and Safe Sport Certification.
- First Aid Ready: Certified in CPR/First Aid.
- Equipment Knowledge: Skilled in maintaining and assisting with rowing equipment upkeep.
- Background Check: Able to pass a comprehensive background check.
Responsibilities
- Lead All Aspects of the Team: Oversee every part of the Conestoga Crew Club rowing team.
- Safety: Establish a safe environment that is conducive to learning rowing and supportive of physical, social, and emotional development of the student athletes.
- Develop Training Plans: Create and implement a structured and effective training program.
- Direct Coaching: Provide direct hands-on coaching to athletes and mentor Assistant Coaches in best practices.
- Ensure Compliance: Adhere to Conestoga High School policies and Rowing supervisory guidelines for the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association (PSRA). Ensure team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of athletes are communicated and followed
- Prioritize Safety: Implement and follow comprehensive safety and risk management protocols.
- Manage Equipment: Coordinate the procurement and upkeep of all rowing equipment.
- Organize Practices: Schedule and conduct training sessions both on and off the water. We practice afternoons after school during the week and early mornings on weekends.
- Conduct Seat Races: Run seat races and provide strategic input on boating lineups.
- Coordinate Regattas: Plan and manage logistics and team lineups for the weekend. Ensure registration by established deadlines. Arrange boat usage and transport.
- Foster Athlete Development: Offer leadership to enhance the growth and performance of rowers.
- Support College Aspirations: Collaborate with students aiming to row at the collegiate level.
