GENERAL DEFINITION
The Animal Care Attendant is responsible for the overall care of all the animals within the shelter. The responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the shelter.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
Work is performed at the Franklin County Animal Shelter under immediate supervision of the Animal Shelter Manager.
TYPICAL TASKS
- Thorough cleaning of all public areas and animal areas, including inside/outside runs, cat areas, floors, dishes, bedding, etc.
- Spot cleaning of animal and public areas throughout the day.
- Feeding the animals, including providing special diets as needed.
- Monitoring the health of the animals on an ongoing basis and rapidly identifying any health problems or conditions (medical or behavioral) and immediately reporting it to the Supervisor.
- Maintain cleaning and folding laundry.
- Stock supplies and donations.
- Greet customers and assist with adoptions.
- Walk dogs daily and rotate them in outside play areas.
- Grooming and bathing of animals.
- Daily trash removal.
- Sweeping and mopping the floors daily.
- Assist or complete animal assessments.
- Take animals to the veterinarian as needed.
- Pick up donations or supplies from local businesses as needed.
- Attend and/or assist in offsite animal adoption events.
- Give vaccines or medication as needed from veterinarian add/or supervisor.
- Answer phones, prepare adoption, intake paperwork as needed. Document and enter information into shelter software program on computer.
- Assist with animal intakes from animal control and the public.
- Assist in euthanasia. Willingness to complete euthanasia certification.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and use of standard cleaning equipment. Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment. Ability to make simple arithmetic calculations and file alphabetically; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to utilize Microsoft office and email.
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Animal handling experience is desired.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RELATED OBLIGATIONS
Weekends and Holidays are expected. Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operators license. Must complete an "Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) within 6 months of employment if offered.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to occasionally lift 50 pounds unassisted, stand long periods of time, operate a computer and general office equipment.

Work is generally performed in an animal shelter environment.
