ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Follow directions as given by supervisors. Adhere to the mandatory guidelines for youth care, nursing and all policies and procedures.

Provide care to residents in a manner that considers safety, resident’s rights, resident’s comfort, maintains confidentiality, and respects cultural and religious differences.

Lead and participate in recreation services to residents both individual and groups by following approved, scheduled activities and the program calendar developed by the Program Director. Assist with trips outside the facility, including 12-15 hour out of town trips.

Teach and assist residents in activities of daily living including maintaining the cleanliness and repair of the facility property and tools.

Follow the Individual Treatment Plan and implement the specified plan interventions when needed. Use positive reinforcement to promote positive behavioral changes. Assist with physician holds, physical restraints, and seclusions under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

You are counted in the staff/child ratio. Remain with assigned residents to interact, assist, and /or transport residents (unless instructed otherwise by immediate supervisors, Director of Youth Care, Youth Care Coordinator, and Charge Nurse). Always obtain approval from supervisors before leaving the assigned work area. Assured coverage is provided for assigned residents prior to leaving.

Explain activities, events, procedures and/or treatments to residents, family and other caregivers in a language and cognitive level understood by people served.

Observe and document resident behavior in a one on one or group setting and report unusual observations to a Youth Care Coordinator and Charge Nurse. Submit legible and accurate, written or dictated, behaviorally specific and goal-oriented progress notes to client records in a timely manner, preferably by the end of assigned shift.

Assist Program Director in maintaining an accurate inventory of supplies and equipment. Assist with the cleanliness, upkeep and repair of the activity therapy department, equipment, tools, and supplies.

Recognize and report suspected abuse and neglect according to policy, procedure, and law.

Participate in personal performance appraisals and staff development by completing all required annual training, i.e. Handle with Care, CPR, fire safety, infection control, training, and certifications necessary to manage and guide residents in a safe, effective activity and recreational therapy program.

Maintain a positive work atmosphere by modeling positive behavior and communicating in a manner that promotes cooperation and teamwork with co-workers, supervisor, residents, and visitors. Adhere to the organization’s policies, procedures, and code of ethics.

Maintain a safe work environment by following safety practices within the center and reporting any safety concerns/issues to the Safety Risk Management Officer immediately.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS-
Valid Missouri driver’s license.

Experience in a mental health setting (preferably with adolescents), and knowledge of child/adolescent growth and development and the ability to relate to adolescents with substance abuse or mental health problems.

Knowledge of community resources and recreation principles and practice.

Experience in coordinating, supervising, and participating in therapeutic group activities such as physical education, leisure education, adventure therapy, arts and crafts, etc.

Must be able to participate in the scheduled physical activities.
