Position Summary:
The Head teacher / Lead Teacher will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Early Head Start (EHS) classroom including building relationships with the children’s families. The head teacher will collaborate with an assistant teacher to ensure the successful operation of the classroom. The head teacher will also collaborate with a team of other teachers, family workers, consultants, and administrators to implement the curriculum to achieve the goals for each child. He/she will create developmentally appropriate lesson plans, as well as an individual plan for each child. The head teacher will implement and supervise the implementation of the lessons to meet children’s school readiness goals and support their development across all domains. He/she will document children’s progress, assess their development, conduct parent-teacher conferences, analyze outcomes report, etc. He/she will be responsible for keeping all children safe.
Qualifications:
A Head Teacher or a Lead Teacher for an infant/toddler program shall be at least 21 years of age and have the following qualifications:
(1.) Associate’s (AA or AS) degree in Early Childhood education; or
(2.) Infant-Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA) certification and a study plan leading to an associate degree in early childhood education within seven years; or
(3.) High school diploma or equivalent (GED); nine college credits in early childhood education or child development; two years’ experience caring for children, and a study plan leading to an associate degree in early childhood education within seven years; or
(4.) High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and five years of supervised experience in an infant/toddler classroom if currently employed in a permitted childcare program; or
(5.) High school diploma or equivalent (GED); and a study plan that is acceptable to the Department leading to nine credits in early childhood education or childhood development within two years; and a study plan leading to an associate degree in early childhood education within seven years, if currently employed in a permitted child care program.
* An applicant with a BA/BS in ECE, MA/MS in ECE, or NYS Teacher Certification in ECE is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement a child-centered curriculum and a learning environment that encourages positive social interactions, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation to promote development in all early childhood learning domains
- Address challenging behavior; implementing preventive measures, teaching the child new social and communication skills, and partnering with families to support the child at home.
- Preparation of the daily lesson plans
- Develop an individual plan for each child
- Supervise the planning and implementation of the classroom accounting for the academic, social emotional development, physical and mental health of the children.
- Conduct two educational home visits a year
- Complete a screening of each child within the first 45 days of school
- Conduct quarterly assessments using Teaching Strategies Gold (Fall, Winter, and Spring) and monitor student progress
- Record and analyze students’ progress in terms of the Child Development Center’s school readiness goals
- Assist children and families with transitioning in and out of the program
- Maintain classroom equipment and materials
- Ensure the classroom is safe and clean
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Center/Education Director
Requirements:
- Basic computer literacy in e-mail, word processing and internet navigation
- Must have Child Abuse/Mandated Reporter, Preventing Infectious Diseases/Foundations in Health & Safety, SIDS and AHT training before employment start date.
- Obtain CPR/First Aid training within the first six months of employment.
- Bilingual- Spanish/English applicants are preferred
