Overview:
Stewart & Stevenson is Now Hiring a Sales Application Engineer-Off Highway at 8631 East Freeway Houston, TX 77029. The Engineer is responsible for providing engine and transmission equipment engineering applications support for sales programs. The Engineer will be responsible for technical support existing product lines as well as developing new product packages. This person will use their understanding of technology, materials, and manufacturing methods to both support sales & after sales activities as well as design new assemblies and sub-assemblies through the use of engineering principles and techniques. They also will use those skills and knowledge to implement Design for Manufacturing, Design for Supply Chain, and cost control initiatives. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for performing installation validation reviews and testing both in-house and at customer's facilities.
Responsibilities:
- Support the off-highway sales and engineering team by providing technical assistance to powertrain engine and transmission equipment sales personnel as needed when calling on customers.

Writes clearly and informatively; edits spelling and grammar; able to read and interpret written information including blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.

Confer with vendors, staff, management personnel, internal, and external clients regarding product specifications and manufacturing capabilities to achieve desired design criteria including the concept, performance, and production requirements.

Facilitate the closure of new and existing business by providing design and engineering support for all aspects of OEM programs including product design, process design, competitive analysis, quotations, and project management of subcontractors and vendors. Design, develop, and test all aspects of structural, mechanical, power train, thermal, pneumatic, basic electrical, and hydraulic components, and systems incorporated into the Stewart and Stevenson product offerings.

Work with customers and OEM engineers to define product improvements to meet specific performance requirements for product applications. Identify the suitability and availability of materials and components.
- Write and implement basic engineering processes and procedures.

Develop and test design concepts by computerized modelling or physical hands-on testing to assess feasibility, operating performance, possible new applications, and necessity of modification.
- Complete and Maintain documentation necessary to fulfill regulatory requirements including but not limited to ISO 9001, Engineering Changes Notices, and New Part Number Requests. Produce a full manufacturing specification package including engineering BOMs.

Produce detailed specifications using dedicated computer software to produce specifications, including parts lists and costings. Specify system components or direct modifications of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
- Applies knowledge of engineering principles to design mechanical systems that may include hydraulics, mobile machinery frames, engine packages, cooling systems, HVAC, etc. Research and analyze all available sources of information, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
- Confer with other engineers and shop staff to validate the assembly, operation, and maintenance operations and perform test functions of new prototype machines and current production product offerings.

Perform technical support actives to support existing equipment and products in the field. Work with supplier personnel as necessary to investigate standard equipment failures and system malfunctions. Recommend design modifications to eliminate such equipment or system malfunctions.
- Display or demonstrate products, using samples or catalog, and emphasize technical capabilities and materials applications. Make presentations as required.

Build relationships and work with sales personnel, business partner sales personnel, and business partner technical personnel to help achieve the powertrain equipment population goals for all organizations. Arrange meetings and liaisons with engineers and other stakeholders to discuss design status updates.

Assess mechanical engineering needs pertaining to new and existing projects and apply existing engineering design or develop new designs as appropriate to meet identified needs.

Establish relationships with key management staff and decision makers to increase new business to meet sales targets. Participate in specialist or multidisciplinary team meetings.

Oversee installation, operation, maintenance practices and procedures, and repair assistance to ensure that machines and equipment are installed and functioning according to specifications. Conduct research that tests and analyzes the feasibility, design, operation and performance of equipment, components, and systems.
- Develop, coordinate, monitor, document, and report all aspects of installation to ensure proper application and installation procedures are followed.
- Perform project management reporting tasks.

Qualifications:
Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline
-
Minimum 3 to 7 years’ experience in mechanical design in an industrial environment
-
Relevant product design and support experience with heavy industrial mobile equipment
- Experience with the design and use of Diesel engines, Planetary Transmissions, Electrical Generators, Centrifugal and Reciprocating Pumps preferred.

Experience with 3d solid CAD modelling and file management software tools
- SolidWorks and PDM software suite preferred.

Fundamental understanding of analytical tools such as Finite Element Analysis or Computational Fluid Dynamics

Experience with MTU iPAS, Allison iSCAAN, Volvo ProSales, Deutz SIS and TIS, and/or other manufacturers sales and engineering tools preferred

Field experience as an engineer, technician, or technical support for diesel driven equipment preferred.

Relevant product design and support experience with heavy industrial mobile equipment in the oil field, automotive, heavy truck, construction, mining, agriculture, forestry, or military preferred

Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written

Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
