Position Description:
We are recruiting a senior-level lab manager / research specialist who has experience managing a large-scale research program for groups conducting preclinical and clinical studies. The lab manager will oversee operations for a 10+ person lab in the Duke School of Medicine (Department of Anesthesiology).
This position has many responsibilities, including:
- Ordering reagents and assist in inventory management.
- Oversight and management of a large mouse colony.
- Assistance with regulatory documents such as IACUC protocols, IBC documents, IRB documents, and drafting SOPs.
- Participate in the general oversight of the lab, including basic lab maintenance, lab organization, and oversight of critical lab reagents and equipment.
- Assist in lab personnel management by ensuring compliance with institutional/lab safety rules and policies and assistance with onboarding and training of new lab members.
- Contribute to experiments where appropriate. It is expected that this position will involve both managerial duties and direct involvement in research projects. As such, candidates will need to maintain consistent experimental records via electronic lab notebook documentation and should be able to interpret experimental results, conduct troubleshooting experiments, generate research/data reports, and assist in the preparation of manuscripts and publications.
Education/Training Requirements:
- A bachelor's degree in a biomedical-related discipline is required. Candidates with a graduate degree are strongly preferred.
- >4 years of experience as a lab manager / research analyst is required for this position. Years of direct experience can be offset for individuals who hold M.S. or Ph.D. degrees.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Strong organizational skills and multitasking proficiency are required.
- Basic understanding of statistical approaches for study design and downstream data analyses are expected.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Applicants with managerial experience, a demonstrated publication history, and experience mentoring junior trainees will be preferred.
- Prior experience in the fields of neuroscience, immunology, or cancer biology are strongly preferred for this position. Knowledge of university business practices and systems is highly desirable.
- Candidates who possess experience with the following experimental techniques are also ideal for this position: surgical manipulations in mice; behavioral phenotyping in mice; histological methods and light microscopy; molecular biology experience (e.g., PCR, western blotting, ELISA); cell culture techniques; flow cytometry and FACS of mouse and human samples.
Position Title & Compensation:
- The candidate chosen for this position will be hired in whatever title best suits their experience and qualifications (ex: Lab Research Analyst II, Lab Research Analyst Sr, Staff Scientist). As such, candidates will be compensated in a manner commensurate with their position title and educational/experiential qualifications. Yearly merit increases are expected in this position.
