With general direction from the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, provides a wide range of technical services on company buses, vans, and automobiles. This is a journeyman position that requires significant technical training and /or experience. Also works under the direction of the Terminal Manager and Maintenance Shop Manager/Supervisor.

Specific Duties:
- Performs thorough, accurate Preventative Maintenance inspections. To Include but not limited to: Check interior of bus (seats, padding, windows, flooring, etc.) and exterior of vehicle while walking around it.).
- Following schedules completes all required PM maintenance operations including lubrication, fluid changes, brake adjustments, and tire rotation. (Will require him to open engine cowling to gain access to engine. Can lean into engine to make repairs or inspections. Will use bumper jacks and seat creeper to change brakes or perform brake inspection/repairs)
- With direction from the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, performs unscheduled maintenance as needed. (May have to start working on a bus that was put out on service issues. This would include repairing them to get them back into service in a reasonable period).
- Performs complex operations including engine, electrical, fuel, brake, and exhaust repairs and field tests. This requires interpreting and working from drawings, specifications and other technical materials. (Performing diagnostics on the bus and analyzing what needs to be done to fix or repair the error).
- Must operate CDL and Non-CDL vehicles (buses and van) to perform road tests, as well as shuttle in an out of the garage for repairs and maintenance. (The mech must drive the bus to confirm or replicate the mechanical failure that is reported in order to repair it).
- Must be able to lift heavy equipment (up to 50lbs) including, ladders, tool chests, etc. when necessary.
- Must be able to operate bench grinder, torch, drill press, Jack and Jack stands, sawzall, oil pumps, power washer, parts cleaner and other hand tools required to perform work.
- Performs emergency roadside services as needed. Requires operation of either replacement vehicle or utility truck.
- Emergency conditions may require calls at home, extended hours, or weekend work.
- Document repairs and parts on work orders completely and accurately.
- Maintains tools and work places so that conditions are neat and orderly.
- Performs other duties as required. (Parts inventory, shop clean up, washing of buses, plowing yard for snow, etc. Filling in pot holes with wheel barrel of dirt or rocks and leveling the ground to fill in ruts).
- Ability to safely lift over 50 lbs.
- Provide own hand tools required for regular maintenance.
- Perform DVIR repairs – daily based upon needs of fleet and work orders being submitted by drivers.
- Assist with starting buses for AM/PM routes – (jumping off buses that won’t start, putting ether into the system to start the bus, etc.) As needed
- Able to stand long periods of time while performing medium and heavy duty motor work. (Ex: Performing a turbo replacement, etc.)
- Sweep shop floor, wipe down equipment, tools, parts, work stations, mop spills and empty out oil reservoirs into main tank. Call vendor to have them come out and empty main tank to keep oil reservoirs empty and clean.
- Conducting monthly inventory, based upon shop manager schedules, ordering parts using the computer system and restocking them in the tool crib.
- Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of tools, procedures, technical skills and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered equipment.
- Written and verbal communication skills, and customer service skills are essential. Ability to deal with problems and find solutions.
- Must have knowledge of Federal and State regulations.
- Operational knowledge of motorized gasoline, diesel and alternative fueled vehicles, and shop equipment and tools.
- Scheduling and setting priorities for work to be accomplished.
- Inspection of equipment and diagnose mechanical defects.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Associates Degree from an accredited College or University preferred; not required.
- At least five (5) to seven (7) years hands-on experience working on diesel engines with large buses or vehicles.
- Provide own hand tools required for regular maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of tools, procedures, technical skills and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered equipment.
- Written and verbal communication skills, and customer service skills are essential. Ability to deal with problems and find solutions.
- Must have knowledge of Federal and State regulations.
