The Academic Coach will manage the academic pace and progress of participants pursuing their high school diploma. More than a teacher, the academic tutor is adept at motivating youth and providing individualized support to keep youth on track while minimizing frustration. Identification of barriers and working with other team members to mitigate issues, the academic instructor will also serve as a liaison with community partners. Strong documentation skills, record keeping and effective communication as a team member will be maximized to target outcomes in this performance outcome.

Essential Functions:
- Monitor participants in the classroom while they are working on academic assignments.
- Provide a supportive and optimistic classroom climate in which participants are actively engaged in learning.
- Use basic classroom management principles to redirect inappropriate behaviors and utilize appropriate YouthBuild staff for referrals regarding more complex issues.
- Identify potential barriers to progress and work collaboratively with the team to address issues with positive support.
- Conduct all TABE Testing as required to ensure Measurable Skills Gain for YouthBuild Participants
- Play an active role in Mental Toughness Orientation at each school campus
- Establish and maintain relationships with school personnel in order to mitigate problems such as gaps between course completion and the assignment of a new course or getting modules “unlocked” should a participant submit consecutive failing quizzes / tests.
- Develop a working knowledge of self-directed on-line academic curricula including Apex and other systems.
- Maintain detailed notes and tracking systems that monitor participant pace and progress and provide routine summative reports.
- Ensure participants have appropriate access to web-based instruction including fully operational laptops and/or Chromebooks and immediately notifying the Program Manager or Director if technical problems arise.
- Provide tutoring and academic instruction as needed.
- Complete a Monthly staff summary using data and success stories to keep the Program Director informed.
- Travel to all three Towpath Trail High School locations in the Akron and Barberton area.
