The SD Department of Education is seeking a Career Development Specialist to provide guidance and technical assistance for middle and high schools in the south-central region of the state related to the implementation of high-quality career and technical education programs. In addition to broad support for career development efforts, the position will serve as a statewide subject matter expert for the designated career clusters and education initiatives.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide technical support for the development of strong career education systems in school districts in the region.
- Manage Perkins grant requirements and program reviews with school districts in the region.
- Establish connections with and provide support for new teachers and programs in the region.
- Serve as a liaison between educators, school districts, the DOE, technical institutes and business and industry partners.
- Develop and coordinate training for educators.
- Coordinate advisory committees and implement strategies based on committee guidance.
- Serve as liaison to a CTSO.
- Provide content expertise related to Career Clusters and DOE Initiatives:
- curriculum standards;
- assessment & industry certifications;
- academic integration;
- SDMyLife;
- work-based learning;
- sequence of courses;
- business and industry partnerships (relationship building); and
- program/course/student organization implementation strategies.
This position works as an employee of the Department of Education with regular office hours. The position could be located in the department's office in Pierre or work as a remote employee in South Central/ Southeast South Dakota. Approximately 60% of work is conducted from the office; 40% of the position's time is spent traveling for work-related duties and events. Most travel is in-state; occasional out-of-state travel is required. Some evening and weekend hours are required. This is a full-time position with the Department of Education. Licenses and Certifications:
National Career Readiness Certificate of silver or higher is preferred.

Associate degree is required, Bachelor's degree is preferred; professional experience in education, business, and/or the Career Cluster areas required. Preferred candidates will bring strong teaching/curriculum expertise and/or industry experience.
