General Summary of Position
Assists physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmia's in the Cath/Angio/EP Lab specializing in the care of patients undergoing PTCA, stent placement, IABP placement, embolization of vascular bleeds, thrombolysis catheter insertion, and EP devices and ablations. Additionally, assists physicians with non-vascular procedures such as percutaneous drain placements, gastrostomies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and other interventional radiology procedures. With increased experience provides resource and mentoring to new staff while exhibiting enhanced technical skills

Experience

Licenses and Certifications

- Demonstrates knowledge regarding location, use, and troubleshooting of complex technical equipment/instruments such as pulmonary artery catheter, intra-aortic balloon pump, portable x-ray, radial/brachial setup, coils, nitric oxide, thrombolysis catheters, peripheral and solid organ angiography and embolization, and peripheral interventions including balloon angioplasty and stenting. EP procedure troubleshooting of complex equipment including Carto mapping.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and calculates valvular areas on the hemodynamic monitoring system.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and technical skill to problem solve x-ray and hemodynamic monitoring equipment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- The Cardiac Cath/EP/Interventional Radiology technologist assists physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease in an invasive procedure arena, specializing in the care of patients undergoing: Basic and complex diagnostic catheterization procedures on adult patients with known and suspected congenital and acquired cardiac and peripheral vascular disease. Complex diagnostic procedures may include valvular, congenital defects, pulmonary involvement, radial, brachial and neck approaches, O.R. portable procedures, and any research protocols.
- Basic and complex interventional procedures which may include PTCA, stents, IABP placement and operation, pulmonary artery catheter placement, thrombolysis catheters, peripheral and solid organ angiography and embolization, coils, peripheral and congenital interventions.
- Basic and complex angiography procedures which may include PTCA, stents, embolization, biopsies, drain placement, coils, radiofrequency ablation, and peripheral interventions.
- Basic and complex electrophysiological procedures which may include EP studies, implantation of pacemaker, ICD, BIV, ICD and atrial/ventricular ablation.
- Operation of the physiologic and radiographic equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Maintain high standards to achieve quality patient care.
- Cross-training to all labs (Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology, as applicable) is mandatory.
- Performs patient care procedures that require additional skill and training with competency such as sheath removal including IABP, temporary pacer and central venous and arterial catheters.
- Performs in the role of data entry, generating accurate reports from diagnostic or interventional procedures.
- Assist in the orientation of employees and students as requested by management.
- Patient transportation, good communication and evaluation of patient status during the procedure, provide age and gender specific care, prep access site according to lab standard practice, and perform EKG lead placement, blood pressure and pulse oximetry setup for hemodynamic monitoring.
- Procedural requirements: Room preparation and breakdown to include fluid preparation with accurate contrast concentrations, stocking rooms, daily quality control checks, radiographic, hemodynamic and computer setup, and room cleanup. Prepare sterile procedure tray and patient sterile field appropriately for specified procedure type.
- Observe occupational and radiation safety regulations (wearing badges, lead aprons, goggles, and gloves).
- Acquire and accurately document pertinent patient data on encounter form and enter into hemodynamic and x-ray systems.
- Function in all roles rotating during the day as defined: Room circulator - patient interaction, monitoring/vital signs and procedural documentation, setup equipment such as IABP, power injector, temporary pacer, biopsy, and sterile equipment/catheters/balloons/wires handoffs, running blood oximetry for cardiac output; assist physician with EP Diagnostic and Mapping systems including Carto. Scrub - maintains sterile procedure, infectious control, observe all fluid patency of catheters, balloons and manifolds, assist according to physician direction. Monitor - functions in the control room operating the x-ray equipment and hemodynamic monitoring equipment, reporting EKG, blood pressure, heart rate, pulse ox changes, recording hemodynamic pressures accordingly, scan pertinent patient and procedural information into hemodynamic system, assist with x-ray equipment and transfer images to digital archive.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager of the cath lab.
