Summary
Performs technical and specialized work of a moderate grade of skill in connection with chemical and environmental systems; industrial hygiene (IH) testing, analysis, detection and repair of defects in related systems, devices and instruments; assists others in making tests, surveys and layout work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists on cooling tower water testing.
- Assists on plant cooling water testing.
- Assists on air and hydrogen dew points.
- Assists and learns Performance & IH Technician work.
- Assists Performance & IH Technician Senior with circulating water chlorination testing.
- Assists Performance & IH Technician Senior with pulverized pitot tube calibration, pump tests, coal scales calibrations and pulverize fineness testing.
- Assists with shake downs for pulverizer fineness coal samples.
- Assists on polisher/demineralizer regenerations.
- Assists on polisher/demineralizer maintenance.
- Assists on condenser inspections.
- Assists on unloading chemical trucks.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Education: Four (4) year bachelor’s degree in any field of study with a preference for Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental Science; OR Two (2) year associate degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental Science; OR Two (2) year associate degree in another discipline with five years of relevant work experience in an industrial, utility, or lab environment.
Experience: Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by Cardinal Operating Company, all required training to advance to the Performance & Industrial Hygiene Technician classification or vacate the Performance & Industrial Hygiene Technician Junior classification.
Licenses & Certifications: Must be able to pass a Technician Occupations Selection System (Tech) examination, if required. Must obtain and maintain all necessary certifications and licenses as required.
Knowledge: Must have a moderate degree of knowledge and skill necessary to perform work with standard laboratory and chemical analyzing equipment. Must be familiar with equipment and clearance procedures, safety practices and current procedures applicable to the work. Must have a working knowledge of applicable OSHA and Environmental guidelines.
Abilities & Skills: Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints, sketches and specifications. Must be able to distinguish colors on a standard color blindness test. Must be able to work effectively with other employees and learn to instruct and direct other employees. Must have demonstrated the ability to physically and mentally perform work in all areas and heights required.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk; sit; work with hands and fingers; push, pull, reach, and lift objects; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Must have close visual acuity to analyze data, perform inspections, view computer monitors and assemble parts.
Work Environment
This position requires working in extreme heat and cold both in inside and outside environments; environments containing fumes, odors, dust, gases, and high amounts of noise and vibration. Additionally, this position requires the ability to work in close quarters, narrow passageways, at heights, on grating, platforms and catwalks.
