Position Description
Kennel technicians are part of the animal services team at the Helotes Humane Society (HHS). This position is responsible for the daily care of onsite animals as well as cleaning and disinfecting all kennels and rooms that house onsite animals. The animal services team provides our animals with love, compassion, daily exercise, and enrichment. Kennel technicians report to the Executive Director.
Summary of Expectations
Kennel technicians are hard-working animal lovers. Kennel technicians must be reliable, organized, efficient, and detail oriented. Kennel technicians must be self-starters, work with minimal supervision, and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs). Kennel technicians must be able to work with a variety of animals in various states of health conditions.
Roles and Responsibilities
Animal Care
- Ensure the health and safety of animals in the care of the organization.
- Report any obvious signs of illness, disease, or behavioral issues to the Animal Services Lead or Executive Director.
- Feed and water onsite animals according to documented dietary plans.
- Administer medication and treatments according to documented medical plan.
- Report any change in appetite or behavior to the Animal Services Lead or Executive Director.
- Clean and sanitize animal care equipment (e.g., bowls, litterboxes) in accordance with SOPs.
Animal Training and Socialization
- Provide exercise and socialization for animals according to documented behavioral plans.
- Utilize animal handling skills to provide a safe and friendly environment for the animals.
Facility Maintenance
- Ensure cleanliness standards for onsite animal facilities are met.
- Inspect onsite animal facilities during shift to identify and report safety issues.
- Dispose of trash and animal waste in facilities and on grounds in accordance with SOPs.
- Wash and dry towels, blankets, bedding, etc., according to SOPs.
- Clean and sanitize kennels and rooms with onsite animals according to SOPs.
Administrative
- Complete required documentation in accordance with SOPs.
- Monitor and respond to organizational emails.
Knowledges and Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of animal care best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 1 year animal care work experience.
- Verbal and written English proficiency.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to work with animals that may be diseased, injured, or have behavioral issues.
- Must be able to work in an environment with loud noises, potential exposure to contagious disease, and the use of harsh chemicals (e.g., chlorine).
- Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions.
- Weekend and some evening work will be required along with periodic on-call duties.
- Long periods of standing may be required.
- Lifting or moving items weighing up to 50 pounds will be required.
License and Certifications
Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
