Job Title: Web Plain Language Coordinator
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Writes and edits web-based content using plain language writing principles;
- Able to write, rewrite and edit complex, wordy material currently written above an 8th grade level to use plain language principle (brevity, no jargon, logical order, headings, lists, etc.) so that the revised text scores between a 5th and 8th grade reading level.
- Routinely and independently plans, manages and executes projects by setting timelines, milestones and deadlines while obtaining necessary clearances and approvals,
- Provides training and guidance to other web managers in CA based on best practices, policies, and procedures within the Department.
- Serves as managing editor and plain language authority for pages on travel.state.gov.
- As instructed, activates the crisis and emergency features across travel.state.gov during normal operating hours and occasionally after hours, in the event of a crisis involving consular operations in the U.S. or abroad.
- Serves as 508 compliance coordinator for web, video, and other digital content;
- Coordinates digital content organization within the Bureau of Consular Affairs, including video, web products, and printed products.
- Coordinates organization of web content with larger Department reorganization effort; Web governance for CA so we are consistent between our web content and style guide.
- Supports content development for long and short-term digital campaigns, in consultation with key stakeholders and members of the Outreach Team.
- Enhances the efficient and effective presentation of the Bureau’s information.
- Manages the implementation of Agency Web content policy, procedures and standards.
- Participates in and attends regular web manager meetings.
- Participates in Website Support Services (WSS) for travel.state.gov backlog refinement every other Thursday.
- Identifies current and future content needs and priorities of the offices and directorates.
- Manages the office web inventory and apply QR codes for spot check and yearly checks.
- Coordinates with federal agencies and public/private partnerships to share information across public websites (DHS, Commerce, CDC, White House, etc.)
- Attends meetings on web modernization projects.
- Creates user stories when asked and checks the progress of stories in CST’s tracking tools.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
- A bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years’ experience writing and editing online content.Advanced degree in Writing Composition,English or Communications may be substituted for 2 years of the experience requirement.
- Knowledge of grammar, writing and editing practices, and the style requirements, best practices, and guidelines outlined at plainlanguage.gov.
- At least 3 years’ experience and expert-level mastery of plain language and best practices for customer-first approach to content development for the web and digital platforms.
- At least 3 years’ experience and accomplishments in effective web communication to a broad range of readers.
- At least 1 year experience in coordinating large and wide-reaching communications projects that convey information of a highly technical or complex nature.
- Experience creating writing style guides and glossaries to ensure web content is written in plain language and uses consistent terms across written products.
- Ability to manage complex workflows, and multi-task under pressure and on deadline.
- Proficiency in User Experience design principals.
- Experience using Content Management Systems (CMSes).
- Experience writing content within character limits.
- Familiarity with Google Analytics (GA) or the Digital Analytics Program (DAP).
- Knowledge of customer experience survey tools (Qualtrics, Foresee or similar).
- Basic experience with HTML including HTML 5.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite – Microsoft Sharepoint.
