Responsibilities and Job Duties
Pre-Operative Care
- Educating patients and their families regarding the surgical procedure and what to expect
- Provide preoperative instructions and ensure that all preoperative tests are ordered, such as blood work, Istat, imaging studies, and electrocardiograms are completed in a timely manner
- Obtain specimens such as drawing blood, urine samples, and other bodily fluids for lab work
- Conduct thorough preoperative assessments of patients, including medical history, physical examination, vital signs, administer medications, start intravenous (IV) lines and perform other nursing interventions as necessary to prepare patients for surgery
- Dispose of proper items in the proper containers/bins
- Verify informed consent for surgery and ensure that patients fully understand the nature of the procedure
- Nurses should maintain organization as they often care for a number of patients at the same time
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients experiencing anxiety or fear about the upcoming procedure
- Pre-op CT patients such as obtaining IV lines, consent, tests ordered and paperwork
- Maintain accurate recording and thorough documentation of preoperative assessments and consent
- Triaging patients such as obtaining intake and documenting patient height, weight, blood pressure, oxygen etc
- Reconcile medications, document in patient's chart and send prescription refills for physician to sign
Post-Operative Care
- Monitor patients after their procedures, pain/discomfort, complications, and facilitating recovery process
- Monitor for signs of postoperative complications, such as hemorrhage, infection, respiratory distress, or adverse reactions due to anesthesia or medications
- Administer medications, intravenous fluids, and other treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers to manage pain, prevent complications, and promote healing
- Monitor and maintain patient comfort and safety, ensuring proper positioning, ambulation, and use of assistive devices as needed
- Provide education to patients and their families regarding postoperative care instructions, including wound care, activity restrictions, dietary guidelines, and signs of potential complications
- Document patient vital signs during recovery process
- Ensure proper post op care including access site management, ace wrap, unna boot application
- Provide wound care, such as cleaning, applying antibiotic ointment and bandaging
- Perform 24 hour wellness checks for post procedure patients and advising physician of any post procedural complications
- Scheduling follow-up visits for all patients
Facility Maintenance
- Inspect the facilities and act to maintain excellent hygiene and safety such as decontaminating equipment, sanitizing surfaces, preparing beds etc.
- Ensure that patient pre-op chair and stretcher is decontaminated after each patient use
- Collaborate with other nurses to organize bays and stock pre-op area at end of day
- Organize clean utility room with patient arrival packs for procedure, patient blankets, filling up blanket warmer, equipment needed throughout the day and ensure it is fully stocked by the end of shift
- Weekly inventory check, provide inventory department with list to ensure products are ordered in a timely manner
- Checking medications for expiration date every december, removing them from the carts and communicating with the appropriate party to ensure orders are placed
- Ensuring that every code cart is up to date and up to code
Emergency Response
- Assist physician and staff during emergency
- Documenting during emergency situations
- Ensure code carts are up to date and prepared for emergencies
Administrative Tasks
- Complete charts for next day scheduled procedures
- Maintain clear communication and organization of tasks
- Keeping a clean workspace such as keeping areas clean, free of clutter
- Maintain athena inbox cleared before the end of the day
- Responsible for all rules and regulations in the Sorin Medical employee handbook
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
At least 1 year of acute care RN experience
Current and unrestricted New York State RN license
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
Experience in cath lab procedures, pre- and post-operative care, and cardiac CT
Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
