Summary of Position
Maintains the Animal Shelter and kennels and assists in feeding, caring and placing animals under the general direction of the Animal Control Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Provides a safe and sanitary environment for the temporary housing of animals by cleaning, sanitizing and maintaining animal cages, kennels, pens and runs and ensures all are in good working condition and safe for habitation.
· Assists in the feeding, care and placement of animals.
· Provides inoculations, appropriate preventive care and basic medical treatment to animals in accordance to current shelter policy and procedures.
· Assists the public in adoption, redemption and lost and found services in a courteous manner.
· May assist in the Animal Shelter office by answering incoming calls, processing fees paid to the animal shelter, and completing paperwork for animal adoptions and other animal related dispositions.
· Cleans runs, cat room, quarantine rooms, work room, kitchen, euthanasia room and lobby of Animal Shelter facility.
· Assists in conducting daily animal inventory to insure each animal is entered in the shelter’s management software and the proper paperwork is posted on each animal’s kennel.
· Assists volunteers by assigning duties and recording hours worked, trained, etc.
· Assists the public and other shelter staff.
· May assist Animal Control Officers with euthanasia.
· Identifies injuries and illness in animals and reports condition promptly to the Animal Control Supervisor.
· Assists in public education relating to responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, cruelty and City ordinances.
· Allows availability to work all shifts including holidays.
· Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position.
· Perform other work as required to insure the humane treatment and care of the animal.
· Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Works under general supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
· Ability to handle all animals including feeding and cleaning cages using disinfecting chemicals.
· Knowledge of adoption policies and provides screening of potential adopters.
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, or similar software, with the ability to quickly learn new software.
· Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws relating to animal control code.
· Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
· Knowledge of safety practices and procedures relating to animals.
· Skill in oral and written communication.
· Skill in handling multiple tasks, planning and prioritizing.
· Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.
· Ability to provide excellent customer service.
· Ability to effectively communicate and tactfully handle difficult and/or irate customers.
· Ability to work all shifts including holidays.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, the general public, supervisors, and employees.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D. At least one (1) year of verifiable work experience in animal services field. Experience in customer service preferred.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. While performing administrative work, the employee will use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to operate assigned equipment and adhere to all safety guidelines. Possibility of exposure to irate citizens. Possibility of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, materials, animals and inclement weather while in the field.
