Job Title: Supervisor of Middle School Special Education
Location: 401 Rutgers Avenue, Swarthmore PA 19081
Schedule: Full-time - Exempt
Position Description: This is a full-time position, working Monday-Friday during the 10-month school year, ESY and ten additional administrative workdays during the summer. The Supervisor of Middle School Special Education (SME) is responsible for implementing a quality education program to students with multiple disabilities. The SME will lead an education team in an evidence-based program, that aligns with IDEA, PDE regulations and GCMS policies and procedures. The SME will provide supervision to all staff in the middle school program, including teachers, paraeducators, and specials teachers.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Implements best practices in special education aligned with IDEA and PDE.
- Aligns program to meet all regulatory requirements.
- Leads continuous investigation and implementation of evolving evidence-based practices that has synergy with the GCMS education model.
- Monitors classroom activities for follow through with an integrated educational model.
- Supervises and supports the coordination of appropriate community-based instruction (CBI).
- Leads a culture of assessment. Evaluates congregate data for trends and insights to move the program forward.
2. Provides direct supervision and coaching.
- Manages the hiring, onboarding and daily staffing for the middle program.
- Provides direct supervision to teachers and educational staff in middle school program.
- Completes monthly informal observations with direct feedback to teachers.
- Coaches classroom teachers as case managers, including observation of paraeducators.
- Approves payroll and monitors compliance with attendance policies.
3. Oversees the fidelity of the IEP process.
- Trains and monitors implementation of evidence-based instruction and evaluation procedures that meet the full range of special education services and supports.
- Leads classroom teams in the development of meaningful educational goals and activities, and specifically designed instruction to support student progress.
- Develops teacher skills to lead the ISP process and meetings. Attends IEPs for middle school students as needed.
4. Collaborates across disciplines.
- Collaborates with school administrators, teachers, and therapists to facilitate middle school education programming.
- Collaborates with Supervisors of Elementary and Secondary School Education, as well as Clinical Manager and Supervisor of Related Services to ensure continuity across programming.
- Collaborates with Transition Coordinator to create meaningful transition activities embedded in the middle school curriculum.
5. Leads the administrative oversight of the middle school program.
- Communicates proactively, speaks with empathy and alignment to policy.
- Serves as a resource to parents, families, students, staff and agencies.
- Develops and manages middle school budget in cooperation with finance department.
- Attends administrative meetings and work sessions as required, and attends professional seminars, conferences, and workshops as needed by the position.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Special Education or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
- Level II Certification required.
- Supervisory Certificate required or demonstrated willingness to obtain.
- A professional background with (5) years of experience in special education, vocational education, and/or related community agency work.
- Demonstrated success managing performance of a classroom team.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of federal and state laws governing special education.
- Proven knowledge of student characteristics with respect to special education.
- Proven knowledge of Trauma Informed Care and implementation philosophy.
- Proven knowledge of formal and informal assessment approaches that will guide key planning documents and demonstrate ability to transfer that knowledge to colleagues, teachers, and staff.

- Proficient with various software programs, such as Word and Excel, and a proven ability to learn and effectively utilize position-specific technologies.

- Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on solving conflict without blame and managing difficult or emotional parent/community situations judiciously.
